Future Trailer Build (maybe)

I have been pondering on the topic of an off-road trailer for a while now and I think my best route is to start with a military trailer like this one and and make my own roof rack to support a roof-top tent. It would primarily be used for camping so nothing too extreme and it would have to be street legal. If any of you have tips or or tricks to make it a worth-while build and to make it not fall apart and kill someone on the road...

Build it light weight.Its nice to use jeep bolt pattern on the axle so you dont have to carry a specific spare for trailer only.

I ordered my trailer axle from Dexter axle in the same width as my JK axle hub to hub. With 5 on 5 bolt pattern. You can specify sprung over or under and the leaf center measurements so it will bolt right up to your existing trailer springs. All for about $135. I used my stock JK wheels for the trailer since they were free. lol

Yeah I definitely think the axle change would be a good idea. What about roof-top tents? What ones do you guys love?

If you don't mind me asking, where did you get your trailer and for how much? I'm assuming it was from a bid? Also is there anything I should look out for besides major rust when looking at them?

This my trailer I had my friend build for me. Pictures are from this last June when ran the Rubicon with my Oregon buddies. I even took it down through the Old Sluice. I went to Bend Oregon to get the CVT Tent. The top opens to get inside where I have my fridge/freezer and it has a tailgate to just get in the back. I added a bunch of the tie down tracks to keep stuff in place.

It was a military auction on Govplanet. Put a bid for $450 and won. Drove down to Fort Jackson and picked it up. I needed a pintle receiver and some magnetic trailer lights. It had 1 bald tire but i got it home no problem. The 37" tires and 16" humvee wheels are cheap and plentiful. Mine was built in 97 so there was zero rust. I think they have corrosion protection.

Registration was easy with bill of sale. Make sure to get one with VIN listed.

Some mods I did so far.
Replaced the lights and wiring with standard ones.
Painted flat black.
Added tongue tool box.
Mounted Hilift and 2 jerry cans to the wheel wells.
Added spare tire and mount.

Future mods.
Build a rack for tent.
