Diff service cost

Hey everyone,

I need some input here from any of you out there. I was told by the dealership that I need a diff service, but

1. they didn't show me if it needed to be done (the other place did, sadly that's in NS)
2. they quoted the price as being $650 (possibly more) they said that I need front, back, and transfer case done
3. when they quoted me the price he seemed very awkward with it (his mannerism didn't sit well with me)

I know that most people do this themselves, but I have no experience with it, so i'm looking for input

Eddie has a write up on here, very simple to do. You don't need experience, and theres only one way to get it. It will cost under $50 if you do it yourself. You don't even need to take the cover off if you don't want to. Maybe another $20-30 for the transfer case. On the other hand, $650 is a ridiculous price for an hour job.
 
x2 on doing it yourself. Very quick and easy job. Saved myself about $600 if that's what the dealerships are asking.
 
Holy what in the actual fuck!!!! That's awful dude. There is no way...it's not even labor intensive. I takes an hour tops.
 
While I would do it myself as well, if you figure the shop rate is 120 per hour, and they charge an hour per gearbox, you're looking at over 350 in labor, then there are parts, tax, Al Gore epa fees, etc. Just saying, shops aren't cheap to run. But for as easy as gear box fluid changes are, do it yourself.
 
Prices are absurd!!!! But I'm not surprised being that the OP is in Ontario, it doesn't surprise me! Bear in mind for you folks down south that's more like 510 US which is still crazy! I just recently did my transfer case and followed eddies write up. The others are right it's very easy! When I went to the dealership to get fluids (manual transmission fluid and transfer case fluid) it cost 8.10 plus Tax for the ATF4 from the stealership so you will save a boatload of cash doing it yourself!

Needed 2 containers so total was 18.31 for the fluid for it and it's about 20 or per container of diff fluid at Canadian tire

I didn't even catch that he was in Canada. Yeah, your prices are through the roof up there. We do a lot of claims up there.

Yeah it's a little ridiculous up here and hard to get decent parts in some places. I had the jeep in for some warranty stuff one time and they dealership told me I needed the diff fluids changed and wanted me to fork out 150 a diff. And I said nope! But then I had a shaft seal leak on me a week later took it back to get that fixed had the front fluid changed under warranty(since they fixed the seal) and then did the rear myself. Lol cost me all of 50bucks for the fluid and saved 250 ha ha I remember they wanted to charge me 90 to clean the throttle body at like 30,000KM and so I bought some throttle body cleaner pulled the TB and it was still clean ha ha. I couldn't imagine paying them 90 bucks to do nothing.
 
They are charging you that much primarily for the transfer case flush. You probably don't need it as how many miles are on your jeep??

Call another shop or two about the diff service if you don't want to do yourself. And have the dealership break down the costs. Just cuz that is the quote, never pay the quoted price.
