Did you buy your JK modified?

I bought my Jeep stock.
I've purchased a couple of rigs in the past that were already modified. One was not built very well, the other one was. In both cases, I ended up re-modifying them. Nothing was gained by buying them already built.

Fixing mistakes made by someone else is a lot harder than fixing your own.

Just like these good people say its bettee to be stock and build it up. You really do get the feel for the jeep and start to know parts by names and not call them " that thingy that goes there to do that thing." Lol. Also if it breaks then you know how to fix and know why it brokw in the first place. You really do appreciate it more when you work on it your self.

Thanks for all the replies. I can detect a slight consensus that it should be bought stock. Makes sense.

I personally would say yes and no. It would depend what the vehicle has currently on it and if your buying brand new. Of course I didnt read everyones reply as well.

I bought my used '07 in '07 from a family that could no longer afford it. It had a 4inch short arm POS lift on it, WE wheels, 35's, and a few other minor accessory type of upgrades. Needless to say the only thing that remains is the WE Wheels, everything else has been replaced and upgraded. Long Arm lift, axles, drive shafts, etc. At the time, I got a sweet deal and with the basic lift it got me started and kept me going for about 1.5 years until I needed better quality components.

The stealership around here charges crazy pricing for basic coil and shock lifts off the lot, most of the JKs around this area are running stealership over priced lifts. If you are buying new I'd suggest get it stock then go with good quality components in the particular areas you need to upgrade for your wheeling style.

TONS of people buy a JK and put a crappy lift on it to sit on bigger tires and look cool! Look under it and look for rash on the control arm brackets at the axle and frame, the gas tank skids and the bottom of the differentials. If they are clear of any real scrapes/damage, then odds are it was an all show Jeep and I would jump all over one like that! I would only buy it for what you would buy a stock Jeep for though. It will get you by until you can upgrade the components and allow you to build slower. NEVER pay a premium for the parts on a modified Jeep unless it has exactly what you want on it to start with :twocents:

Bought mine used with very low miles to save money....

And did 100% of everything... from making bumpers to welding front end up.... that way you know whats done and 100% what you want.... thats my 2cents

It is hilarious, but it made me laugh at the people who look down on people who pay shops to work on their rigs. Even though I have turned my own wrench on every bolt on every vehicle I have ever owned...I think it takes away from the WAL to look down on anyone who has a shop do some or all of their work. Until you ACTUALLY build it like this guy did...I don't think you can talk shit :twocents:

I bought my 2009 stock. Lifted it with a basic budget boost 2 days later, installed Bushwhacker flat fenders the day after that along with new wheels/larger tires. Several weeks after that, an EVO 1/4 Pounder front bumper went on along with rear EVO d-ring mounts and an OR Fab rear tire carrier. If you can follow instructions, the work was all pretty simple.

My 2012 had a Teraflex lift, aftermarket wheels with 35's, Bushwhacker flat fenders, and a Smittybuilt front bumper and winch installed when I bought it. I managed a much better deal on this Rubicon versus a similar stock one because most people don't want the mods so in many cases, they reduce value. Worked in my favor in this case. None of the mods are being kept, the lift is being sold and replaced with coil-overs. The wheels/tires have already been sold and replaced with Beadlocked 27's. The smittybuilt front bumper is sold pending receipt of my new PSC stuff. So I was able to subsidize the build of this JK by selling off the aftermarket parts the prior owner had installed, keeping only the Bushwhacker Fender Flares which I would have installed regardless.

I bought mine used…but I am one of those that would never buy new…...2008 JKUR one owner w/ 70K on the odometer from a gentleman out east. The Jeep never really had seen the dirt before I purchased it, but had a considerable amount of money dumped into modifications already. Paid $22K for it a year and a half ago. I thought it was a deal I couldn't pass up. Oh by the way he was originally asking 28500 I believe. So don't be afraid to make offers, you might just get lucky.

Below is the list of mods from writeup. Are there things I would have done different? yes, however the Jeep is more than capable for my needs and the items that might get changed are worth money unlike stock crap. Will it get upgrades? yes but if you find the right Jeep, and there are many out there especially out east where most guys don't or do not have the opportunity to drag them through the rocks, you can find some excellent deals. They will get you a huge head start….and you are not paying for all the mods. Yeah you might not know as much as you would if you built it from stock, but that all comes in time anyway because if you are going to play, your going to pay.

bone stock with the crappy 16in rims lol save the money for the mods you want not the upcharged dealer mods or someone elses idea of a jeep, make it your jeep!

i try to make sure i do my own work but sometimes stuff is out of league so i pay my buddy to do the work for me. :yup:

I bought my JKUR already done pretty much. The owner previous to me had most of the work done at a local shop. It had 21,000 miles on it and was loaded with quality items. 3" tera lift , 17 x 9 wheels, 35" KM2's, bilstein shocks, JCR front and rear bumpers, with 2 roto paks, rigid light bar and D2's with a SPOD installed. Front and rear fog or back up lights in bumper. Banks intake. Paid 35,500 dealer wanted 38,900. Stock 2012 jkur's were going for between 32,500 to 38,000+. This jeep had about $6000 in parts alone installed on it let alone labor. So not bad. I had no time to really build this Jeep this time. I build Custom cars. Recently spent 5 years from restoring from the ground up a 1949 Ford Custom Coupe. So I do do my own work just not on Jeep this time. Although have done some things to make it mine.

Did ur buddy do ur gears?

no i went to globex performance in toms river NJ. my buddy did my carrier, all the welding, front bumper when i had it installed, lift (when i was still unsure about doing it alone), and control arms.

I know your going to buy out the lease at the end but, I'd love to see the look on their faces if you went to turn it in looking like it does today... :)
