Automatic transmission problems

Hi all,

Firstly I'm located in Australia, Secondly need to help/advice.

Okay so I'm having problems with my jeep. It's a 2011 Jeep Wrangler jk 3.6ltr automatic, only done 89000k's, I've only had it for 10months an only did 15000k's.. I haven't even taken it 4-Wheel driving since I bought it second hand.. 2 months ago my jeep stopped running due to gearbox failure an my extended warranty only covers upto $2000.. Took the jeep into see a automatic specialist an reckons could cost anywhere from $2000 - $6000 depending on how good or bad the problem is. I'm just looking for your guys opinions and/or experiences (if any) on whether it's cheaper and/or better to...

1- get it repaired
2- find another gearbox or
3 - manual conversion.

Any advice is much appreciated

I would look for a wrecked, totaled, JK to use as a donor tranny. Converting to a manual would take more work than a simple swap. You'll have to do some research to see if there were any changes year to year. I would expect any auto tranny, from 2007-2011 would work. I would also talk to a transmission shop, to make sure there are no huge differences, (such as electronics), before purchasing a used transmission.

Honestly, I don't even know if you can do it on a 2011-up. Even if I could, I don't know if I would and that's coming from a guy who like's manuals.

Yeah was checking to see if that was a better option, my gearbox is totalled!! Will run in drive cuts out as in "when my foot is on the accelerator it'll just stop an rev up" then won't move in any gears.. I thought it would be cheaper and better rather then getting a automatic transmission specialist to repair the current gearbox to which he reckons worst case costing upto $6000

You might be able to find a salvage yard on ebay with good reviews or a good warranty. Just make sure and do your research, a lot of those companies really do go through things and make sure they're selling a good used part. If they ship internationally that is.

is there a aftermarket program on that jeep? like superchips or procal?
do you have oversize tires?

WOW!! Im sorry to hear this! 6K is crazy for a new unit and r&r i'm assuming. No one there can rebuild it for a decent cost? Here in the states it would cost around 1,200.00 to have it rebuild including r&r, depending on who you go too. Some people get over charged and pay closer to 3k for a rebuild.

I'd get a second opinion. If it's loosing drive suddenly without slipping that sounds more like a solenoid problem which won't require a rebuild to fix. Try a gearbox place that specialises in Mercs as if you have a 3.6 you've got the WA580 auto which was originally a Merc gearbox and very simple inside.

I'm not sure, I don't think there is, wheels are aftermarket

I was wondering because I went through a similar issue when I changed tire sizes. the programming did not take hold and the transmission begin to slip and not shift to the point where I thought it was going to need a rebuild.
Luckily for me in the shop I took it to tested it and informed me that it was not the transmission. I reprogrammed at the stock, unplug the battery to reset the cpu then reprogrammed it for my tire size and it has been fine ever since.
Based on what you said I'm going to assume that the tires are the stock tire size
Unplug both battery cables and with them both unpluged touch them together this will reset the CPU connect everything and see how it does
