A Week Off to Celebrate 31 Years

It's hard to believe that Cindy and I have been married for 31 years now and to celebrate the occasion, we decided to take a week off, do what we love most, exploring the Nevada desert and spend some quality time out at our Tin Camp. Needless to say, this was an R&R trip and not one we were really planning to document so we didn't take as many pics as we normally would but here are a few pics that highlight some of the fun we had.

After getting an early start, we stopped in at one of our favorite breakfast spots, the Courtyard Cafe.

In addition to having really good food, I got a chance to get to know the owner's husband this time around who was there to help out and as I would come to find, he was a Jeep enthusiast with a nice CJ-7. Being that we like to sit at the counter, we got talking for a long time and eventually found out that he was a retired Navy SEAL. Really nice guy and I look forward to talking to him more in the future but for now, here's some of the yumminess that we got to enjoy.

Soon after getting back on the road, Ripley reminded us that we were coming up to a place she loves to romp around at and of course, we made a stop to let her do just that.

I should note that we enjoy making the stop here too especially being that there's a ton of petroglyphs to check out too.

It's not the best pic being that I had to zoom in a bit with my phone but as is typically the case out here, we also got to enjoy quite a few jets in the sky putting on a show for us.

On the move again, we didn't get too far before deciding to stop again and this time, at a popular spot along the Loneliest Highway, The Shoe Tree.

One of the things we love most about making stops like this is often times, there are historical T-Markers that highlight passages from diaries of emigrants that made the long trek to California, over 170 years ago.

From here, we decided to hop off the pavement and head into the wilderness.

Now this is what I'm talking about! Out in the middle of nowhere and with NO signs of civilization anywhere - AHHHHH

Of course, Ripley absolutely loves to play frisbee out on the playa as well. Here's a shot of her waiting for me to throw it.

Always cracks me up how she has to assume a super low stalking stance even when there isn't any cover to hide behind.

Back in civilization and time to refuel 😁

Home sweet home!

While exploring the Nevada desert was definitely on our to do list, our main purpose for this trip was to spend some quality time at Tin Camp and so the following pics are from our time there. That said, our first morning there was spent doing some hiking just outside our back gate.

Back at camp, we had fun watching a flock of chukars pecking around the pasture.

One of the big projects I wanted to take on was getting this old Craftsman LT 10 36 tractor/riding mower running again and I'm happy to say that it now is :)

Gotta love old tech where you can just install a battery, tinker around with the carburetor, put some gas in it and maybe a little starting fluid and you can get it going again. The next time I have to mow, it'll be a lot easier.

Always love the evenings here in summer.

While you can still drive on a lot of the original trail, there are still quite a few sections that are off limits but you can still make them out if only because they're marked.

20250810171336-f41e3ee6.jpg

Stopping to check out the old Canyon Station, one of the many Pony Express stops along its almost 2,000 miles route.
20250810171328-9b69f21b.jpg

This station was originally located about 3 miles to the west but it was relocated here and built out of stone after it was attacked and burned down by Indians.

20250810171339-49382dcb.jpg

After making our way though the canyon, we found ourselves at the original Pony Express stop which now has a monument put in place for it and with the name, Burnt Station.

On the move again and on a length of trail that still feels like it probably did over 160 years ago.

While the area had been inhabited forever by Goshute Indians and used for a short time by the Pony Express, Ibapah or Deep Creek (clay colored water) really came into being during 1913-1925 after it became a major stop along the Lincoln Highway, America's first coast to coast toll free highway.
20250810171447-fec11b03.jpg

20250810171452-5bdf90d8.jpg

As soon as we got rolling, we just had to stop again and to check out this cool old farm house close to the border.

20250810171510-6d4568d8.jpg

20250810171514-91b1111e.jpg

And, just beyond it, we had to make another stop to check out a monument for the old Deep Creek station that once stood here.

20250810152410-db7fcefa.jpg

As lush as it is and with the Deep Creek Range beyond, it's hard to imagine this valley sits right in the middle of the Utah and Nevada border.

20250810171538-160f8db7.jpg

Blink and you'll miss it and to be completely honest, we did and literally drove a couple of miles before we realized we had passed the Utah / Nevada border. Needless to say, we doubled back just to take these pics.

Always gotta stop to read the T-Markers.

So nice to be back in Nevada!
20250810171605-5e93503e.jpg

It was nice to have a welcoming committee greet us.
20250810171621-e0cda9ca.jpg

With all the antelope we've been seeing, I suppose it was only appropriate for early settlers to name this spring after them.

And here, we sat at Rock Springs Pass. At 7,890 feet above sea level, it's officially the highest point along the Pony Express Trail.
20250810152440-db53964d.jpg
20250810152443-870206e4.jpg

Down from the summit, we stopped to check out the spring that the pass was named after.

Ran into a bit of traffic as we got closer to the highway.

Best way to end a fun day out on the trail is to do it with delicious steak and whiskey!

And finally, back at Tin Camp and just as the sun went down. Sure is nice to still have such long days.
20250810171806-66814716.jpg

I have to say, there really is something to be said about not having any cell service or internet.

Yet another beautiful morning out at Tin Camp.
20250810152540-5ba89c60.jpg

When I asked Cindy what she wanted to do for our anniversary, in addition to exploring, working on Tin Camp is what she said. And so, for the next few days, that what we did and specifically, demoing the log cabin so that we could make it nice.

This is a shot of what it looked like soon after taking possession of the property.

Unfortunately, life was calling and our time at Tin Camp was over. Hoping the next time we come out, we can get a lot more done. Until then, here are a couple of parting sunset shots.
