Lost 3-year-old Custer Boy was Protected by Dog

CUSTER – When it comes to a dog, there are some great qualities it brings to an individual or a family. Obedience, courage, companionship, unconditional love, and loyalty to name a few. These qualities were unflinchingly demonstrated by a little boy’s dog near Custer.

The three year old boy wandered away from his home with his dog, a large brown pit bull, and became lost in the woods. Custer County Sheriff Rick Wheeler says the boy was lost about an hour before rescuers found him about a quarter mile away.

The authorities were able to track the boy and the dog by following their footprints in the snow.

The little boy’s dog did his job. There was no way he would let anyone near the boy. The dog had to know that conditions were not normal. Something was wrong. This dog would have given his life if necessary to protect the child. The bond between the two was so strong that the dog was ready to do the most selfless, single-minded thing it could do. Offer protection and sacrifice itself if necessary.

This episode had a happy ending. The boy’s father had to come and get the dog so the rescuers could do their job. The dog wasn’t harmed and the little boy had no obvious injuries but he was taken taken to the hospital as a precaution. The boy wasn’t identified.

My hat is off to this dog for what it did and for what it was so willing to do. Dogs are some of the nicest people I’ve ever met
:clap2:

Owners are the problem...not the dogs. People are too stupid to own these animals and it leads to innocent people being maimed or killed.

I agree as well. My dog tries to kill me on a regular basis, usually by suffocation or trying to push me out of bed.

But I'll tell you what, he wears a beret better than most non-airborne Soldiers. ;)

Sweet story and sweet looking dogs. Pits definitely have a bad rap due to careless owners. I have a Catahoula with a bit of pit mixed in and we usually walk local trails and have come up on families with kids and the parents have grabbed their kids and have made a reference about pits. I really hate unedumacated people!

I get the same thing with people going out of their way to avoid my dog and all he wants to do is play. Its sad when we used to go to a dog park I felt like a parent who has the kid that no other parents would let their kids around. People are just so judgemental its sad

Unfortunatly we lost Jet last night. We were out exploring the desert like we always do and on our way home he seemed lathargic. Took him to the vet er and he had a tumor that was around his heart and was bleeding out. He wouldn't have made the 2 hour trip to the specialist down in O.C. RIP buddy.

Man, that's so sad. Sorry to hear about your loss.

Wow! I am so sorry to hear that. I feel for you buddy I couldnt imagine losing my pit. Theres just nothing one can say or do to replace or make you fell better. Just remeber all the great times!

Thanks. I'm doing ok with it. But the girlfriend is taking it bad. It is her first pet lost and he was her baby. I'm already looking into adopting another pit puppy from a rescue. Just waiting for them to do the home check and then we will have another, but this time it is a little girl but same color and almost the same markings as jet. Hopefully in the next couple of days.
