A Dirt Head's JK

So we planned on getting a quick desert camping trip in this weekend. All was well when we dropped in, except those clouds…

And after a few meager water crossings we inevitably ran into this barreling down the entire wash…

I pushed through as much as we could, waited it out for a while, but the rain was getting heavier and being with one vehicle I didn’t want to risk getting stuck. I’ve never seen it like this out here. It was DEEP the more we pushed north. My wiper motor is toast from all the work, which also made the dark, foggy, and rainy drive home pretty perilous.

While it was fun going from crossing to crossing, it got old after a little while and we were bummed we couldn’t camp anymore. I eventually turned around after waiting it out on some high ground for a while.

An XJ from further up the trail stopped by to say hi and show me a video of the flash flood starting on his phone. He said he had been waiting it out for a while too and ended up following me out. Pretty much water fording in fender deep water the entire way back out, was pretty wild. The weather said it was clear and sunny in the afternoon we went and had rained the night before, boy was that wrong. Just glad we went in the afternoon and still made it out before dark.

And for reference for those of you who haven’t been here, this is what it usually looks like this time of year:

Wow, that’s crazy how fast the water picks up and turns to flash floods. Bummer you weren’t able to continue the trip but it looked like a good time while you were able.

Wow - haven't seen it like that in years. Bummer you couldn't go camping but it still looked like a fun trip.
