2017 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Recon with $12K+ in Mods

Hey guys,

My wife is used to driving her Toyota Sequoia, and we bought this Jeep to have an additional family vehicle that we could use to explore our favorite places in Colorado and Utah. We've enjoyed it, but it's too small for our family to enjoy on a day to day basis, unfortunately. So, we're considering selling it. It's a 2017 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Recon with fully painted black exterior including the hardtop and stock fenders. It's also black leather inside. We purchased an 8 year/125K mile fully transferable extended warranty with $100 deductible for $2,175.00. We live in TN in the winter and Iowa in the summer, and some of the parts are in both places, unfortunately. Here's what's in Iowa right now:

- Stock Soft Top - Never Used
- Stock Fenders
- Stock crossmember
- Some boxes from the dealer I assume are involved with the soft top that we've never opened.
- stock tires and wheels with less than 1K miles on them

NADA has the Jeep worth somewhere between $38,400 Trade-In to $40,725 Retail. With the parts and labor of all the installed options, we're listing it for sale for $49,900. That's close to half the cost of the mods we've installed, which I've always thought was fair when buying and selling modded vehicles. If we can't get that amount for it, we'll just keep it and buy another family vehicle. We enjoy it when wheeling, but for day to day use, it doesn't fit our needs as well as we'd like.

Now, the Jeep is black, so it has pinstriping down both sides. The paint quality on these Jeeps is one of the worst I've ever seen on a vehicle I've ever owned. It's been wheeled once in Moab, UT, twice in Ouray, CO, a few times at Windrock in TN, and a couple of times at Miobi in IA. The sliders have been used on the rocks, and the front and rear bumpers probably have scuffs on them from hitting or falling off of rocks. The under carriage is fully protected by MetalCloak armor and AEV and RockHard skid plates. I also noticed that on our recent trip to Miobi, the front steering dampener's protected boot is messed up. The interior is in perfect shape and everything on the jeep functions just as it did in stock form.

Nice Jeep. My impression is that you’re overpriced by at least $10k, maybe $15k. But it’s worth what someone will pay, so patience and effective marketing may get you asking. GLWS.

Yowser. Can’t sell it for that. Guess I’ll be keeping. I’ve never had this trouble with any of my Toyota’s. People claim wranglers have great resale but they obviously don’t know what they’re talking about.

Well. You did customize to your specific liking. Makes it even harder of a sell for someone that can build it as he sees fit for arguably not a lot more than your price.

It’s not that people don’t know what they are talking about in regards to Jeeps/yotas. Both hold value reasonably well. It’s a car, never purchase under the self justification that you can resell it without taking a hard loss. You’ll be disappointed every time.

I always find it funny when someone puts 10K+ on their jeep in parts and assumes the Jeep is now worth 10K more. Nope, jeep is still worth the same as before the mods (to an extent).

Jeeps do have great resale value, especially stock Rubicons. There are not more than a handful of used JKUR's for sale within a 200 mile radius of where I live (I know, because I am currently in the market).

However, the fact that your Jeep is modified, two years old, and now there are JLUR's out there with financing likely better than the financing that could be obtained to buy your Jeep, definitely will impact your selling price for most buyers. Most buyers are not going to have $50k cash to buy a Jeep. You also have very specific modifications. If people don't like them or want to build their own Jeeps, they will keep shopping. I'd way rather pay $34k for an unmodified JKUR and put $15k into it than buy a modified JKUR for $49k.

You may get the price you are asking, or close to it, but it is likely going to take quite some time to find just the right buyer.
 
...and for what it's worth, I added up the prices you put next to those parts and came up with $11,967.12. I'm not sure how $9k is "close to half" of that number, but maybe my calculator needs new batteries.

You should expect to get exactly nothing back for labor and maybe, just maybe, 50% of the value of parts but only if you find a buyer who actually wants those same parts. Otherwise, most buyers will just ignore that you even have the parts.

Lol. Yeah, if buying modified is your "thing" then going for something high end like that will definitely get you the most bank for your buck. I'm a bit weird though, and building the Jeep exactly how I want it is part of the reason why I like Jeeps to begin with. So far, I have yet to see someone else build exactly what I want.

I can't sell mine yet in Hawaii, since I just sold my F250 and boat, so I need it to drive for a few more months while my house is on the market...but mine is beginning to look like a pretty good deal...
 
Good looking rig and good luck with the sale. I’m in with the crowd that she’s a bit overpriced based on what else is out there and the new JL’s being out. And keep in mind when Eddie sold Rubicat last year that’s about what he was asking and he had over $30k in upgrades included axles and DTD. But, again it’s good looking rig.
 
I too feel it is overpriced, but you need to find just the right buyer.

I bought mine with close to the same miles, with many more mods, for way less than you are asking, and it was the mods I wanted, at least 90%.

After watching the overbuilt ugly mall crawlers that crossed the block at Barrett Jackson over the last couple days there might be hope for your price for a real Jeep. It’s unbelievable what people will pay for angry eyes and a D30.... Good luck with the sale.

Not telling you anything you haven't heard from other members here. For this crowd it is definitely overpriced. What you need to do is find a new to Jeeps buyer who has no clue what they want in a modified Jeep yet. It is a sweet looking rig, and I'm not saying that your given mods are bad. Just that most here have a very specific idea of what combination of mods they want on their rig. I think craigslist, or even parking in a 4WD shop parking lot might be a good way to find potential buyers.
