The front and rear bumpers are made out of steel i-beams. At least they took the time to weld on some D-ring mounts.
The shovel is in a pipe sticking 4+ inches out from the side of the body with a handle that is cut in half.

Went to that area in December two years back when my mother was volunteering at Pipe Springs monument, had my XJ on 31s and had no issues finding some scenic places. Most of the actual trails I ran were in Moab on the way down.

Carb could be tuned for a different altitude, or clogged jets.
Pull the plugs, make sure they look fine and test the spark on all of them.
Pop off the distributor cap and make sure the points are clean and working, and the spark advance is working.
Disclaimer, I like working on my own stuff and I would do this as a vacation.
Drive it, if it breaks, fix it. Think of it as a learning experience. Most of the bolts should be SAE, bring a set of tools and give yourself some extra time. If nothing breaks hit a trail or two on the way.
I had a SOA on my 85 CJ-7 with stock springs, it was not the softest ride, but I was in my early 20's then so....
If I remember correctly the YJ springs are a little wider up front, switching to them would be a little bit of fab work. I know some YJ guys who are putting XJ springs on the rear...
