1941 Willy’s Slat Grill

After driving the old girl more, it’s badly in need of a transmission rebuild. Once it’s warm 2nd gear is gone and is a real bitch to get into.

So I jumped into it and quickly realized at some point someone swapped a T90 in it. The war jeeps all came with T84’s.

Over the last two weeks, I’ve located all the parts to build a T84. Back where I grew up in Ohio, I local guy named Phil Nelson, has been buying and selling WW2 jeeps for the last 40 years.

I contacted his son Scottt who’s now running the family business, as luck would have it, they had a NOS Ford Script Case still in stock, Ford only offered F stamped transmission very early on in production. Needless to say it’s on the way, along with every part to build a T84 transmission

Have I ever built a transmission? No, but if the 18 year olds back in the day could do it. Well maybe I can…

I’m even found a slightly used floor plate to get it back to original on the floor

Finally got home from traveling and opened up a freshly new 1941 Ford T84 transmission case

Crazy it still has the wax paper on it.

I researched the numbers. The tub is March, February 1943 built by ACM (American Central Manufacturing). It’s a type 1, basically first version built for Willy’s.

The Ford motor dates in to February of 1944. It’s a war time block and head. I also found out it has a Ford Transfercase. (War time ).

The Frame and original Jeep would have rolled off the line February on 1942.

I stopped by to pick up some books from the previous owner Mary last week. She gave me some really cool magazines on jeeps from after the war.

Anyways here’s a shot of my Willys MB from 1997. I had to use AI to clean it up a bit, but the original photo it has the and hood number. This would have been right after Marry and Roger bought it. My trailer is hooked up to it.

Is this the way Tony ?

Perfect! Those magazines on Jeeps must be a treasure trove of history. Your MB looks great in the pics. It's amazing how AI can enhance old pics. I bet you used AI to post the pics as well! 😁

It must be pretty cool to have a piece of history that connects you to Mary and Roger.

It was just the hood that changed it.

For these young guys, that’s a photo album.

Next up, the previous owner to Roger was a WW2 vet that served in Germany during the war.

Roger was a Korean War vet, Airborn unit.
