So I was medically retired from the military after 12 years. My military occupation doest transfer to the civilian sector. Trying to find a career that will pay for my addiction to jeeping. So i would like to find out what you guys think. I am currently In school taking gen edds right now. So any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
 
Xray Tech! That would be a great job. I got out after 9yrs. Im a Detention Officer now.

I looked into it but the programs are so competitive that they only take 10% of applicants that apply. So Voc rehab wont pay for it.
 
Welding is a good choice. I know that here in Wisconsin welders are in high demand. I was talking to someone who works for a company that would have an entire shift added if they were able to find the bodies to fill it. My plan was to get my degree in welding, go work in a shop, and fabricate stuff on the side, until I got good enough to have my own start up. But then life got in the way, and now I am stuck in a job I'm not too crazy about so I can pay bills. Damn divorces.

But I know what you're talking about, being an Infantryman doesn't carry over to the civilian world too well.

Do you have any restrictions (physically) that restrict what you can do? Also, what do you like to do and what type of environment to you like to be in?

I'm a software engineer and love it, so I would recommend that. Pay is good allowing me to afford things like a 2013 JKUR. But work can be stressful and hours long. (thus my jeep is an escape)

My father is a retired forester (Washington state DNR), loves to spend his time outside as much as possible, now in his retirement he does ranger work for the NPS. So I'm sure he would recommend Ranger or Forester, or anything that is outside most of the time, pay not as good, but that doesn't matter when you are truly in your element. every day is a paid vacation day.

If I could do it again, I don't know, but it would involve more freedom to use more of my time as I see fit, and go the places I want to go, when I want to go there. (much like my father?)

No physical limitations but half of my head is titanium and I have a hard time with processing new information. Its mostly math based cognitive function problems.
 
I'm a machinist and I've never had any trouble finding work down here in Alabama.

I love my job, but I always thought it would be cool to be a forest ranger. I have no idea what it pays.

If I was in the military and got out with retirement benefits, I'd find another government job and work it for ~20 years, develop a skill there and then retire and become a consultant. Then you are "triple-dipping" your pension plans. 👍

The Va has me on track for transfer to the forestry program at CSU. The problem is it only pays like 34k a year and with my my medical condition im not sure that I can do the math required for a bachelors in forestry.

Just want to say thanks for everything you did for our country. I can relate to what you are dealing with. I am being medically retired after 15 years as a Deputy Sheriff. I've been in law enforcement since I was 19 and that's all I know. I am also now looking for a new career choice. So many options. If you could get into law enforcement, you would probably love it. It was an awesome career and very close to the military. Best of luck and God bless.

Thank you, Law enforcement has to be one of the most under appreciated professions. I would love that job but I don't think that the VA will approve that because of my traumatic brain injury. I have often thought of running for sheriff lol.

Sure thing. I probably should have wrote that those can be 6 figure jobs. Obviously, it will depend on where you are, who you work for and how long you do it. I'd might also look into the natural gas or oil fields. I would imagine jobs there are booming right now.

Edit: got me thinking about this. I'd look at being a plumber too. Those guys charged over a $100/hr. Has to be pretty good money. More importantly...job security. There will always be a need for plumbers.

Running line isnt the best job. But my dads friend started there too. Now he is way up on the totem pole makin a nice income. He loved running line though, so I guess its how you look at it. I got another friend that climbs radio towers and cell towers. He makes really good money too.

Where are you from? If a warm climate go with HVAC, its a Damn good trade to be in, its a bit dangerous but as long as you follow your safety protocols and use common sense your fine. The demand for technicians is expect to almost double by 2020. After 3 years in the field you can open your own business. I graduate next spring and already have side jobs waiting on me from business's that family works at. If you go union you can make around 60k your first year that's a good bit for Ohio.

Well if its anything like Ohio ( Texas heat and Alaska cold ) then its perfect because you do maintenance in spring and fall and fix breaks in summer and winter
