Spare tire dilemma.

I'm having a hard time deciding on a mounting solution for my spare tire.

Currently running 35x12.50x17 trail grapplers in factory wheels and I'm currently albeit temporarily using a spare tire extension bracket to make it work. I've finally got the budget for a proper spare tire carrier.
Problem is im not sure if I want a stand alone carrier i.e PSC EVO etc or if I want to save a little more and do a bumper/carrier combo. Eventually I will run 37's but for now I'm on 35's and likely will be for a few years.

A shove in one direction or another would be helpful.
 
I have a PSC rear tire carrier/bumper and I really like it but wish I would have gone with an EVO carrier and fascia. Mainly because I like the look of it. The PSC works great. Both will set you back around $1400-$1600. Sorry for not pushing you one way or the other. I'm sure more will chime in. IMG_3373.jpg

I'm guessing that your 35s are mounted on factory wheels which is why you have a spacer? I'd make sure your spare tire isolators are long enough and prevent your spare from wiggling and keep your factory spare tire carrier until you are ready to get 37s.
 
If you go EVO cage/carrier, you have to run corner armor too. Then that leads in to rocker armor, sliders, coil overs :brows: The PSC or Genrite cage/carrier you can run with or without corners.
Check out the EVO hinged carrier. You can go up to a 37.
 
And one thing to consider, if you are to go with the evo carrier I'm pretty sure you will have to get a new set of wheels as the center bore of the factory wheels is to small to fit on the evo carrier. Someone feel free to correct me if im wrong but i thought i remember seeing that?

I did the diy pvc isolator extensions for quite a while, didn't work out well for me and the tire was very tight against the pvc. Still squeaked and rattled around not to mention the extra abuse and rattling of the tailgate. Id suggest going with the tire carrier of your choice. I went with a body mounted version with upgraded hinges. Not a sound since, I'm quite happy with it and wish I had done it sooner.

Thanks for the info guys. I've only been running my spare on the factory tailgate for a few weeks and I'm going to take it off until I can make a decision. It's already causing the tailgate to sag. Nothing some good ratchet straps and cargo hooks can't solve for now.
I'm leaning towards the PSC tire carrier. That way I can choose a bumper later on down the road. Anyone else running it and if so how are you liking it? How much of a PITA was the install?

If that's the case, another option you might want to consider is the AEV tire carrier. It mounts to the frame and ties into the tailgate and you don't need to have their bumper to make it work.
 
If I had to do it all over again, I would go with either the Crawler Conceptz body mounted, or the new EVO Body Mounted.

If only for the purpose getting into the gate in one motion.

My Or-Fab has been sturdy, and I like the look of it, but having to unlatch two things to get into the gate is a bit tiresome at times IMO.

The thing I really don't like about the body/tailgate mounted tire carriers is that if come off a big ledge and catch your spare, you are going to jack up your tailgate and rear glass if you have a hard top. You can still get the tailgate open in one motion with A LOT of bumper tire carriers or with something like the AEV tire carrier.

Thanks for the heads up on that one Eddie. I will take a look at it. We've installed a few of them here at our shop and they seem to be pretty solid. I like the EVO carrier but I'm not sure I want the corner armor that is needed just yet. Too damn many options lol
 
I don't have first hand knowledge on how well they work or whether they have enough coverage but I have seen some custom made and 2 retail made "skids" that mount in to the trailer hitch to block hits to the spare like that.

Does anyone know if they offer full quality coverage? If so that may be an option..

I'm looking for a cheapo way to get spare on stock carrier. Won't be wheeling this one. It's my wife's mall Krawler. But I blew my wad on the setup and need to recoup before better options can be applied. I'm running 17x9 fuel mavericks with 4.5" of backspacing and bfg km2's. Words of wisdom?

I did the PVC thing with the size the OP mentioned. I use an upside down mounted
5 1/4 drop draw bar off road as a skid to prevent my spare from being grabbed with great results.

In addition to extending the rubber isolators to help prevent jiggling of the spare, this new thing from Skyjacker should help out too and it's cheap.

Thanks for all the good info guys. Eddie you make a good point about the body/tailgate mounted carriers potentially causing damage. I hadn't really thought about it. I like the AEV set up and it goes well with newer JKU rubicon bumpers too. I dig the look of the PSC carrier but install looks like a Pain in the ass and has the added issue you mentioned. [emoji848] I'm still torn. My local jeep club is doing a run on New Year's Day that I plan on attending. I may check out some other Jeeps to get ideas too.

I'm assuming that helps support the weight and take at least some of the strain off of the gate, correct?
What kind of spacer do you recommend for the carrier?

I'm thinking I might just bite the bullet and go with teraflex hinged carrier. Any experience with that? Seems like a relatively cheap way to go with out spending 1500 on a good bumper/carrier combo and still leaves the option of a nice bumper later.

The stock carrier does a better job than the Teraflex one.
