315 on stock rack for a while? Also, what rear tire carrier to keep factor hitch?

Of course I'm still here, I'm on deployment overseas with nothing else to do and this is too damn entertaining. We'll just have agree to disagree. Reading other's typed responses never portrays intended emotion or lack there of, On to the next one.

Wait, first you were complaining about this thread but now its entertaining? Which one is it?

Sure is hard to read the info in this thread with all this senseless arguing... Can anyone tell me how I need to run a 315/70r17 on a stock wheel on the stock carrier? Do I need some sort of extension or what I know I need the daystar bumpstop extensions

Yes, you can run a set of Daystar bump stop extensions. I have made a set of extension in the past using hockey pucks and thought they worked better. If you still have a factory rear bumper, the spare will sit on the lip of it and that will help out a lot too. In the end, you just want to mitigate any jiggling as THAT is what will cause damage to your tailgate. Of course, in a perfect world, REMOVING your spare from your tailgate is the best option especially if you wheel your Jeep.

Okay cool, that was the plan I'm going do let it ride in the back seat when I wheel I don't want that much force on that sheet metal back there

I don't believe I said I was a fan of anything. you're not putting words in my mouth are you?

Nope, just made an assumption based on your bitching and complaining. I took a look and now see that I was wrong to do so.

this is what you will need to install to keep the tire from bouncing around. There are other's around also, just what I found real fast, you can also make your own...

The biggest problem with running a spare on the tailgate REGARDLESS of what tire carrier you are running is that you can catch it on a ledge when wheeling and that will destroy your tailgate and rear glass if you have a hard top. This isn't something I believe will happen, it is something I have SEEN happen time and time again in the 9 years I have been wheeling with JK's.

I'll take my chances with the TF and see how it goes. If it breaks and my tire goes bouncing down the beltway, then I'll come back and eat crow. Insulting someone's intelligence based on buying a tire carrier on a jeep forum is pretty lame.

Do they allow internet in jail these days?

Yeah I could see that happening, I want a genright or PSC body mounted tire carrier but being that I'm in college I can't really justify the purchase as of yet haha. I'll have to wait a little while for that. I run a soft top but still don't want to run the risk of ripping my tailgate to pieces

There really is so much stress on the hinges. we can feel it every time we open the blue jeeps. I find myself always checking the lug nuts and for any lose room. we are counting the days down before we buy a tire carrier. Will it work yes but from what we have been dealing with its a time bomb and doesn't leave a great feeling inside with that gate ticking.

It started off as observation based criticisms and then grew to entertainment. Don't bitch about my bitching, lol

Eddie, do you have any pictures of how you used the hockey pucks on the tailgate? behind or in front of the factory rubber bushings? I saw a write-up somewhere, where someone added a third bushing below the carrier, do you think the extra support helps?

Totally understood and for a guy like you, this is why I would recommend that you save your money and make it work so that you can run a larger spare on the factory tire carrier. Is it the best solution? Not by a long shot but it is in my opinion a far better one than paying upwards of $600 or more on a tire carrier that we have seen break time and time again and will still have the same problems on the trail.

But, to be fair, you are running a really heavy 37" Nitto Trail Grappler. I personally would NOT recommend anything more than a 35" tire on the factory spare and even at that, only if I had to.

No blue jeep is still on 35s, thats what size the lady likes lol! But still a heavyyyy nitto!

Being that it was a while ago, I'll have to try and see if I can find a pic of it. What I did was drill a hole into the center of the puck. I then cut off the plug on the base of the factory rubber isolator and drilled a hole through the center of it. I then installed a rubber well nut into the hole on the tailgate, placed the puck over it and then the isolator over the puck and bolted it in place. It did a great job of mitigating the jiggling.

Most certainly. This is how the old TJ's came and I still can't figure why they got rid of it on the JK. Adding the a lower support will do WONDERS to hold your spare in place but, it will require drilling. I had seriously considered this as an option but decided that getting the spare off the tailgate was a better thing to do.

After doing some research on that ACE rear carrier, that looks like the way I want to go. 1/4" steel, still opens with tailgate, and retains my factory tow rating. I was initially not going with a built in hitch because most brands aren't rated for towing. I got an email with my supplier to see I can't switch my order from the teraflex to the ACE. It's only probably $200-300 more depending on his pricing.

I'm running one until i can afford to shell out $1500-$1600 rear bumper with a tire carrier along with a heavier tire , and have had no issues with it, paid $129 for it, and it's years light better than the Pepsi can thin shaped factory tire carrier piece of $hit. I'm hanging a BFG 285/70/17 back there, just a baby tire that is probably 58lbs or so heavy, the wheel is around 25lbs, so i'm just couple of pounds heavier than a factory 18" Jeep wheel/tire, the way the spare is supported is better than stock, especially if you're running an aftermarket wheel with non-factory backspace, i prefer my chinese POS carrier than the factory one made in a 3rd world country or who knows where Chrysler is outsourcing the part from, with extended bumpstops. i'll probably use it with a 35 tops that it wasn't very heavy temporarily, but for anything heavier than 95-100lbsor so, i'll make the investment to something better, more likely a tire carrier mounted in the bumper from LoD, Poison Spyder, etc. The SB carrier weights around 25lbs, the factory one is like 2lb total weight, lol seriously, i can't think why someone will say that thing with extended bumpstops is worth anything, the factory piece is not worth its weight filled up with cow $hit in a plastic bucket, take it off and touch that thing out with your hands for crying out loud, you could probably break it just staring at it, i couldn't believe it until i had it in my hands :icon_crazy:
I think the TF unit is too expensive for what is, and ultimately a bumper with the tire carrier is a better way to go, i can't justify the investment just yet and the reason i have this mount for now, it works extremely good for that it cost compared to stock, but again, my wheel/tire combo is around 80lbs.

Something tells me you're not quite clear on how physics work. Try to stand a raw egg with the pit pointing up, and see how much weight you can put on top of it before it breaks...same concept goes for the ultra light OEM carrier, that's 5x stronger than the Teraflex one. Show me a SINGLE photo of an OEM carrier breaking.

ACE bumper/carrier ordered. TF is going back tomorrow. Too bad I have to eat $80 in shipping...

Holy crap! It's the original poster.

Glad to see you made it through the maze on this thread and thread is back on track. Also glad to hear you made a decision on what carrier to get. Hope it ends up working out for you.

$985 for ACE is a lot better than $1500-1600 for the others I was looking into. Not much more than the Teraflex setup and it gets me a 1/4" plate bumper for an extra $300-ish.

It's a heavy setup, but their rear bumper is quite stout. I saw the results of a car accident against a Honda accord vs an Ace bumper, and it was pretty amazing, literally a small scratch on the powdercoat, vs the other car being totalled.
