Tire carrier mod build

Okay so this might be a dumb question, so bare with me but I recently went up in tire size and want a tire carrier for the back, one with a cage going over the tire and the only price they seem to go for is around 1 grand. Whether its genright or evo or spyder, what im wondering is has anyone ever attempted to build one themselves? I have some welding experience and it seems like just simple steel tubing and hinges mounted to the body. Which shouldnt cost soo much. Am i crazy?

I have never made one but from owning the evo carrier I can tell you it's more than just nice welds and solid tubing. It's very well designed. I'm sure if you have the know how you could build something unique.

After owning the genright, and now the evo, there is a good amount of work that went into making these fit the way they do. If I had a tube bender and and more time, I could have prolly made one but not been as happy with it. I think it would really come down to how you want it to mount more than anything. Theres a reason they are all expensive tho I would say.

Ya i get wht ur saying guys, I guess im just trying to save a little money on a piece that seems overpriced but of course I've never made something like that before. I agree that they prolly spent a good amount of time and man power designing them. And thats probably a reason they are so much. Not sure yet if im gonna try to fabricate something or just give in but thanks for the replys!

The tubing fit has to be precise to get good welds and you should have above average welding experience to make sure it holds together due to the weight and amount of daily vibrations the carrier gets. you could add a hitch support to help hold the weight of the tire but the carrier still needs to be solid.

Ya I get what you're saying. And I've considered that, thats why im really hesitant about trying it. Was mostly just wondering if anyone has successfully attempted it or tried and their spare went rolling down the highway next to them lol

Check with a local fabrication shop and see what they could do. I use to work in a fab shop and we made everything from bumpers, skid plats, racks and so on for our four wheelers. Just an idea if you wanted to spend the time to just check into it.
