6 speed wont go into reverse

I would say you have one that falls in the rare category. Between be wife and I, we have diagnosed/replaced about a dozen clutch and or throwout bearings and we can't remember one ever making noise depressed and not released..... But I've learned to never say never so anything is possible.

Just seems to make more sense to me that by applying pressure to a dry/worn bearing would cause it to grind and/or squeal more so than having no pressure on it. Knew I shouldn't have ditched class that day, D'oh!

I completely agree what you're saying makes more sense, it's just not how it seems to work most times.

I think most of the noise is caused by chatter from the worn bearing that is loose under no load. This looseness is taken up when the clutch is engaged. If bad enough, it is this loss of clutch throw (making up for bearing wear) that causes insufficient clutch engagement and makes shifting harder.

It could be the synchro or even a bearing acting up. These trans can be sensitive to oil and oil life, they have bronze synchos which require syncrhomesh type oils. I would start with a good quality oil change and go from there. Dont use the wrong oil.

Hey guys,
Ive been having an issue with getting into reverse the past week or so. It only happens in the morning, after the jeep has been sitting all night. It will go into every gear but reverse. This morning it took me about 3 mins to finally get it to engage. Once I drive it for a bit, it will work perfectly.
Any ideas? It is a 2010 JKUR with 60,000 kms
thanks in advance

I've had a fair share of rigs that had that same problem.. Mostly older rigs,

When the clutch is depressed, the gears are still spinning forward sometimes. Try putting it in first gear right before you try reverse. This will stop the gears from spinning and will likely let you go straight into reverse.

I had an old pickup that would not go into reverse without first sliding it into first to slow the spinning gears.

Sortof a dry sound, but if it's a throwout bearing it won't be heard as much, if at all, unless you have the clutch depressed rather than released, opposite of what was stated a few posts back.

Do you even know how to drive a stick?? 😁

Sure, but it's using a clutch that I don't understand, so just don't use it, lmao.

It's funny-

normal people use the clutch

People who WANT to be cool double clutch

And people who ARE cool don't use it at all!

So many options!

And for the life of me I can't figure out where Jeep put the switch for the Jake Brake. Maybe only the Rubicons have that option.

I almost said this. I have been doing that since my Dad taught me to drive, so now I think its standard and that everyone already does it...haha guess Im getting old.

I have not found the switch in my '14. Every time I hit the down side of a pass my right arm goes out.

It's automatic to me... If it has any trouble getting into gear, I just throw it in one that it will go into, then try again. Works every time

I've driven a bunch of different old cars, an it is certainly more common with them.

I've tried this, it goes into all other 6 gears, but it is getting more difficult. It will not go into reverse any easier after going into any other gear first. Again, if the jeep is off it slides into reverse perfectly
