Get your new JKs now, seems like it's all over - No more Soild Axle in 2016

$17k for a triple bypass EVO lever double throw down with all of the trimmings. It will run just fine in the desert, even with a 3.8. You ever seen GCM, WOL, or Mel running in the desert? (Pre-V8's). And no, I'm not saying it's as fast as a Raptor...but it's more than fast enough for 90% of people. 60+ mph through 3ft deep ruts is damn fast in my book.

Put $17k into a Raptor and then try to take it through Fordyce or the Rubicon. Let me know where to send the helicopter to pick you up.

The raptor was not designed for the rubicon. You are missing my original point. If you think the wrangler is the end all be all, that's fine. My point was there are the right tools for every job. For desert bashing, I would buy a raptor since that is what designed for. For offroad crawling I would buy a wrangler since that is what it was designed for. Yes you can make a combat boot into a track shoe, but I'd rather get a shoe that was designed for running in the first place.

My idea of desert racing is not just going fast over whoops. Most desert racing out here involves rocks as well. Something the raptor would not even think if going over.

I honestly don't know a lot about desert racing, I don't live near one, so I'll take your word for it. I assumed the guy that said he doesn't like rockcrawling and prefers desert running was talking about loose sand/gravel, for which I believe the raptor was designed to do. Sharkey's 17K DTD mod to the jeep is not a fair comparison because if that's the case, you need to compare it to a Raptor with 17K worth of mods as well. Modifications change the game entirely, so I didn't involve them in conversation, since as illustrated by the smart car above, with enough money you can modify anything to do anything. Hell with a bunch of cash Im sure you can make a wrangler perform on a track. Stock for stock, IMHO, the Wrangler and the raptor are different tools for different jobs. I wouldn't cross-shop a wrangler and a raptor, to me they are not competitors. Just my :twocents:

Just a question, I saw some videos of KOH, and it seems there are lots of trucks (granted, with tons of work on em)...
This is what I think of when I hear desert blasting...

This is why I said I think the Raptor would do better than the Wrangler (again, stock for stock) since it was designed to go fast offpavement.)

Maybe we are talking about two different terrains.

I think you are missing my point. Bone stock, each vehicle has it's strong points. If we intended to keep a bone stock vehicle, I am not sure either of us would be on a forum. My point is simple. It's a lot easier to get a JKU running well in the desert than it is to get a Raptor running well in the mountains and rocks. If money is no object then go ahead and buy both. Me? I'd rather have one $100k rig that can do anything than two $50k rigs that are good at just one thing. I don't think a Wrangler is the be all end all; but I think it's probably closer to it than just about anything else out there (especially if you live West of the Rockies).

4x4's aren't shoes, at least for me. (Can't say I've ever modified my shoes, except for maybe a new pair of laces now and then).

The only trucks at KOH were in the everymans challange. The big race was all buggys and maybe a couple jeeps. No trucks.

I do NOT disagree with your point. The original convo started with this post...

I believe the JK is the most showroom capable and affordable 4WD available today. Jeep won't throw away their loyal customer base if they can help it. Dodge is putting the 3.0L diesel into the Ram for fleet economy numbers so I can see it in the new Wrangler. The basic Ram 4WD trucks get roughly the same fuel numbers so I think an oil burner in the new, lighter, sleeker Wrangler will happen sooner than later. Clearance issues aside, I'm intrigued by the possibility of IFS. Here in the desert you can really rip down washboard sandwashes with the right suspension. It takes major bucks to get solid axles to behave right, where I think IFS may have an advantage from the jump. As stated earlier, Jeep has always advanced the ball. I'm excited and I guess we'll just have to see. Because I already own a 2012, see is all I can do for awhile.

The member said he is looking forward to an IFS jeep because he likes to "rip down washboard sandwashes"...to which I replied why not get a raptor as it was designed for it. The raptor is NOT the vehicle for me, which is why Im on my 2nd JKU in 3 years.

He did say capable and affordable in the original comment. The raptor is not affordable for most at $52k. A base model rubi with bolt ons would come in well over $10k cheaper then the showroom raptor.

True. I did overlook that point. I was always under the impression that you also need serious HP to be able to barrel down in the sand. They really should make an SRT Wrangler. :D

To race you do. But to drive you don't. You can go 100 with the right setup and a 3.8L. But you won't keep up with those 500hp+ buggies.

I want to bring this back to life a little bit. i was watching a youtube channel i watch from time to time (Fast Lane Daily) and they touched on this subject in there episode yesterday. Jeeps CEO confirmed that they were going to keep the solid axles in 2016 but offer more weight saving/fuel saving features to help with the MPG's. i am going to do some extra research on it to make sure its 100% true.

I've also read rumors that the straight axle will remain but drive train options will be available. I'm in the diesel fan boat. If they get the engine right I don't care if it's ifs up front or not because we all know that with money you can do anything lol ;) oh and a welder

The new wrangler isn't coming out until 18...16 is still the current JK model. There has been no real reports of the Wrangler of 18, only educated industry rumors....

From ALL the reading I have done on the subject....my prediction

1) Aluminum tub.
2) IFS
3) Diesel 4 banger

The gurus at Chrysler made a statement about how close the next wrangler is being less than 2 years away and I really doubt they won't have one ready for 2016 since we have gotten a new one every 10 years and most body styles only last about 8 with every other vehicle manufacturer. They are as anxious to get their next gen wrangler out as we are and to start banking those CAFE points. I bet they we do see the 3.2 pentastar motor in the next gen wrangler.

I feel the only things CONFIRMED is that the wrangler is going lighter, different drive train, and is going to have a 3rd model (2 door, 4 door, ?) The way I see it, is if the CEO is saying that talking about redesigning the wrangler is forbidden in his household, I feel confident that he wont do something stupid with it. Have faith.
