CEL Turning Into Big Trouble

Just asking for some over all thoughts. My '24 JLU 2.0L (17K miles) isn't my daily but is mostly stock besides bumper with winch, it sits in the garage besides on the weekends. I've had multiple issues this summer - After a mostly chilling for a while I went to wheel over in Moab and it was driving funny on the way there. Drag link ball joint popped out - Warranty fixed. A couple of months later the water pump grenaded it self - warranty fixed. Internal gasket blew, but since it's an internal gasket I got a whole new water pump. To get some hours on it, I drove it up to Tahoe and back and got a CEL. The diagnosis was "Low voltage EGR". Dealership replaced the EGR valve. Went to start it and it wasn't happy and threw another CEL. Camshaft positioner sensor bad. They replaced that yesterday and now the Jeep is in limp mode, they can't get it out of limp mode, and have zero clue what is going on. They have opened a "Star Case" with Jeep because they don't know what to do. This is now going on 4 weeks at the dealership.

Has anyone else been in this position before of what seemed to be a simple CEL turning into looking like all the electronics and or motor are bad on their Jeep? Any advice? Is this thing a lemon? This doesn't seem normal to me.

Damn, that really sucks! And no, it’s 100% not normal.

Not normal. any rodent problems they like chewing on wires
This was brought up as "It's on you" and not warranty if they find evidence of rodents, which I hear are really bad in Reno this year. Garage kept for the most part and I have zero evidence of rodents in my garage. Also since the Dealership brought this up and said they would document anything and inform me with what they found, they have not said anything yet. So I'm assuming no rodent problems. I'm really hoping it doesn't come to this at the very end with how much time they are spending on it, but would seem odd to replace one sensor to have another sensor go to have it just go into limp mode with none of the parts seeming connected. EGR valve bad to camshaft positioner seems like a very weird leap.

Hate to say it but this ^^^ is what came to mind for me.

Not on my Jeeps but I have had this be a BIG problem on my old Duramax. Turned out to be a very expensive fix too. Hopefully, it's not the case for you.

I’ve got the rid-a-rat strobe lights on all my stuff even in the garage. Hopefully that’s not the problem and Jeep will do the right thing either buy back lemon law it maybe.

I had a 2500 GMC that I had comeback on me multiple times in a similar way that your describing with your jeep. Was over a 6 month period and a few weeks at the end where it never left the dealer lot. Long story short, I finally got it all fixed but that was after the guy traded the truck in.

Sorry your going thru it but it can happen and I’m sure it will get fixed right by the dealer and the field engineer that will come out and take a look at it with the tech

Thanks man. After the multiple issues, I was considering trading it in for a 3.6L vs the 2.0L, but my buddy has a '23 Gladiator that just got diagnosed with a bad outer u joint in the front end, all 4 shocks are leaking and the code or information that says the engine is eating it's camshaft already at ~18k miles. He's getting all that completed under warranty, but that doesn't put me in a very positive mind set on the 3.6. Just sucks if they take the Jeep back since I have done a bunch of epic trails in Telluride and Moab, but at the same time, I def don't want this Jeep to leave me stranded somewhere.

As for the Jeep leaving the shop currently, the exact quote from the service writer was "It's not even drivable right now". Which again is nice it's a 3rd vehicle (I have a work truck - F-150, and the wife has a Ford Ranger). But the Ranger needs to go in for recall work which is about a week of down time, so the plan was to use the JLU but looks like Lithia is going to give me a loaner if it's not fixed in time.

Do you know if they do a buy back is it at current market value or what you paid? It would really suck to loose the $15,000 since buying it that is has depreciated since the plan was to never sell it. I get where they would be coming from to do that, but I have never been through this before. Let's hope it doesn't come to that and that it's also not rodent issues.

Look, every vehicle and mfg has issues with vehicle. Always have and always will, it’s just a matter of how far deep you look. GM has lifter and transmission issues, ford has cam phaser and transmission issues, mopar has the rocker/lifter issues in the v6, etc etc. don’t let one thing deter you from jumping ship. You will only be let down by something else.

The dealership may have its own rodents so the wires may be being chewed right now.

Check if you can return the vehicle under lemon or warranty laws for a new one.

Lemon law needs to be the same concern over multiple visits. Since they keep finding a different cause to the cel then lemon law doesn’t apply.

The warranty law I think you’re referring to is only there to ensure that all mfg adhere and honor the warranty at the time of sale. So the dealer right now is adhering to it by making sure the vehicle is fixed under mopars warranty stated during the initial sale.
I wouldn’t guess what he is referring to. Most of the time he doesn’t even know what he is referring to.
