Did a test run yesterday and at 85 the Jeep tracked straight and had minimal vibration. Pretty impressive with no balancing on a 40-inch tire. I really love Nitto tires.

Turns out, Clays current RD176 locker has the part serial number starting with “18” indicating it was part of the “bad batch” that was going out and with seal issues.
After checking things further, he has a leak at the seal housing AND internal bonded seal. This is why the locker was just completely not working and not at least being intermittent.
After removing the seal housing, we pulled the ring gear to then separate the two halves of the locker. Here you can see the internal locking gear that gets pushed into the side gears to lock. They are massive compared to others. The bonded seal sits underneath the gear and created a “sealed” chamber to push the locking gear inward. Always fun to see the inner workings.
Here is the other side containing the wave spring side/spider gears.

Bonded seal internally which is why we had to disassemble the locker. The seal housing was also leaking (has the two seals inside). Between both the locker wouldn’t event occasionally work.
