How Much Money Should I Be Willing to Pay to fix my 2014 Jeep

Caught the Bug
I changed a 9 month old spark plug and the original coilpack on #4 cylinder to see if this would get rid of the CEL. My 2014 JKU Sport is 11 years old (152K miles) with the 3.6 engine so I've been having nightmares about her needing work. I was going to try new fuel injectors to see if that will fix everything but trying to not throw parts at it. P0304 and P219B. I want to get a compression test but I am concerned about the cost of the repair if it turns out to be the 3.6 common problems with rockers and lifters. I did the above mentioned work in front of my apartment by myself so I was very proud of myself. If the cost is more than $2500, should I consider not spending that much money on an 11 year old Jeep? I've researched this 3.6 issue and new about it but I've read estimates between $2K-$6K. I just want my Jeep to be enjoyable again. One shop charges $125 for a compresssion test and then $500 to remove the valve cover to diagnose. Yeah, the shop will put the $500 charge towards the repair but who knows what the estimate will be. A dealership here charges $225 for the diagnostic but who knows the repair estimate will be at a dealership. Some guidance would be appreciated. This is my second Jeep and I've driven a Jeep for the past 20 years. I was spoiled with the inline 6 on my TJ and loved it.

Thank you and you are welcome. I get alot from this forum and maybe may or may not have known about JL injectors fitting JKs. . I was "two weeks ago" old when I found out about 8 port injectors.

will be interested in knowing if you your mileage improves, idle smooths out, as well as performance (though it'll be seat in the pants)
The JKU seemed to have more pep when starting after being at a red light. I put in a bottle of Lucas fuel injector cleaner and used mid grade gas after the repair. My girl is 11 years old and I'll need more time to see if idle smooths out. I have low expectations for skyrocketing MPG because I do drive a brick. Bonus points if MPGs goes up.

Like I said. I’m no mechanic but I get a lot from this page so I thought I would contribute an ending to my story and pass on info. Enough people used JL injectors in JKs successfully that I was willing to try. Thank you for reading my update.

**UPDATE*** I put over 500 miles in the Jeep after getting the issue resolved and last week the CEL came on. I used JSCAN to see any codes and lo and behold, P0304 came up again. All six of fuel injectors were replaced so it’s unlikely a bad injector. I think the code is somehow stuck permanently and JSCAN says the code cannot be cleared using a scanner or unplugging the battery. Another Jeeper suggested to ignore the code as the issue was fixed and I tend to agree with him. I just wish I was a better “mechanic”. It was empowering getting the resolution for 500 miles.

Not necessarily great advice. Probably need a compression test at this point. If its a permanent code it is only cleared through drive cycles and not with a code reader. If its still there it likely never cleared to begin with.

Compression test was done after PCV valve change didn’t fix the issue and it passed. I’m thinking the code was never cleared also. 500 miles is quite a bit of miles of driving so I was shocked when the light came on. Yeah, I’m not thrilled to ignore the light (the person has a Jeep and does his own work) but I can’t just ignore it. I’m going to see if I can clear the code once and keep trying. The drive to and from Bishop was the longest drive since the fix. I’m going to drive 3 hrs to N Cal and back tomorrow. I don’t drive much weekly as I take a shuttle to work so I’ll see how many 1 hour plus trips I can get in and see if that helps.

Did you check the intake manifold for a vacuum leak?

I'd double check the plug and ignition coil, PIA to swap the plug/coil to another cylinder but if it were the issue, it would follow the coil and plug.

I'd also check the fuel injector/coil connector for corrosion, cuts in the wire that may be shorting it out- sometimes the pin connection gets pushed in too far if the pins don't align.

I put in a new spark plug and coil pack when the issue first started. Intake manifold was checked and those gaskets are only 11 months old as they were out in last Nov when the oil filter housing was replaced. Looked at it again last month after putting in new plug and coil pack in #4

Thank you everyone again for the original help that worked part time. I’ll update again when there is a fix. I’m sure there are others who need assistance with their Jeeps. :)

check the connector and wire, if there's corrosion or the wire is grounding somewhere
