Yesterday in Moab. My son, in his Jeep and me in mine, head out onto Poison Spider then onto Golden Spike. Right at the base of skyline drive we find an older couple, 70s, sitting with their hood up. Pretty new stock JLUR. So we stop to see if they need help. Anti freeze is dumping out. He has his $10 harbor freight tool kit and says he can fix it. He's trying to get the intake off so he can find the hose thats leaking. Makes the statement several times that he would have brought more tools but YouTube told him not to, because they weigh too much. I take a look and can see its leaking behind the fan. I ask them to turn it on for just a minute. As soon as it starts circulating its dumping from behind the fan. I say, in my opinion, the radiator is cracked. Old man agrees. I tell them they should call Rory and call it a day. He said he's watched all of Rory's videos and has his number, but doesn't think that'll be necessary. He's carrying extra antifreeze and he can get out. I ask how much he has, and he says 1 quart. Because YouTube told him more is too much weight. I offer him my gallon but he refuses. I found a thing of JB Weld radiator stop leak in my tub and he accepts that. None of us had cell service. I tell him to put the stop leak in, his quart of antifreeze and get back up on the mesa where he'll have service and call Rory. Oh, no! He's finishing the trail. I told him its an hour and a half back to the trail head, and 4 hours minimum if he wants to do Golden Spike, Gold Bar, and out Gemini bridges to the road, then 20 minutes back to town. He doesn't accept that and insists on continuing. In the middle of this back and forth his wife interrupted me to say "He's watched all the videos, he knows what he's doing!" At that I wished them good luck and packed up my shit and left them. If he really knew what he was doing he wouldn't be out in triple digit heat, alone. And a screw driver and crescent wrench for tools, because YouTube said more is too much. I tried to help, but I can't fix stupid. Fuck them.
 
Idk who Rory is but sounds like he’s giving great advice! Guy you ran into sounds like a total douche and reality is he’s better off without you, let nature takes it course lol.

Edit: just looked up Rory, taking what to pack advice from the guy who makes a living coming to save you probably isn’t the best strategy 😂

i would've taken my supplies back and wished them luck stsying out of the obituaries.

Rory does NOT tell you to not take any tools or pack light.

I don’t know what videos the Old Guy’s been watching. I haven’t seen any advising people to pack minimum gear & tools. Sounds like the OG was setting himself up to learn a hard lesson about off-roading and YouTube.

Didn’t watch a single video, nor do I care. But that old guy definitely seems influenced by something
 
With no extra description of the elderly gentleman in the OP's post, I can almost guarantee he's some type of retired egghead.
Scientist, mathematician, engineer.
I have seen the exact same thing from several elderly gentlemen. If it's outside of their area and they need/want to do it, they watch vidz from Google searches and think that that's all there is to it.

My next door neighbor is one of those. Retired rocket scientist from Naval Avionics/Raytheon (IYKYK). He watches videos all the time to do stuff around the house. Then his wife calls in a professional to fix what he screwed up.

I have saved them a few times, water heater, furnace. But he's cost himself a BUNCH of money.
