Stock...can I make it work?

Just a lil bit more bump stop would have fixed that:)
And slick rock is more like driving on sand paper

I agree but a little bit more bump stop on stock suspension damn near takes away all up travel when tring to keep 35" tires from rubbing.

Rich67, welcome to WAYALIFE family. May I suggest putting together a list things to mod. Then I would look on the bulletin board her and other forums and watch for stock Rubi suspension parts which will provide a little lift.

I ran a 2.5" rough country budget boost on mine for a year and a half with 35's

The lift costed me 99.99.
The tires ran me 880.00 for 4
I did use aftermarket wheels but those were a freebie xmas gift.

I trimmed.the fenders using the normal trim mod style of trimming.

Worked wonderfully and actually outperformed guys with rugs that haf alot more money invested.

Just wheel it and have a good time.
Ive of course upgraded since then as I got married and more than doubled my income (shes pro-jeep)

Id have to agree with most on here. Recovery gear and rocker protection would be a great place to start. A stock Jeep is plenty capable, and you would be surprised where you can take it if your brave enough. Momentum is your friend!! I would definitely invest in a more aggressive tire as well if you don't have a rubicon. It doesn't matter what you do to your Jeep if you don't have traction. Good luck, let us know what you decide to do.

HAHA I was going to chime in with my experience here but JKRossi Beat me to the punch! haha

But you will rub, about an inch onto those mounting brackets, and thats with the inner liner pulled. there was only about 6 inches of up travel also... Its good for a temp fix, but the BB is only around 300. Make the investment IMO

Yea, that's the by product of stock shocks. Some shocks for 0-2" of lift would provide much more down travel, but a BB is always nice:) if someone wanted to stay stock height though, the option is there and u can get the same flex.

Thanks for all this info everyone, I really appreciate it.
I've decided (based on the posts) to go with:
1) New front bumper with winch setup (I am looking at the Smittybilt full width and the Quadratec Q9000 combo)
2) Rock rails (not sure of which brand; I want them to double as step ups, so the stock Rubi looking ones are a no-go)
3) Hi Lift and recovery gear

After that, I am sticking with 33's and maybe a 1.5-2" lift. Being that I live in Florida (for now) and I do a lot of driving for my trips, I want to keep the gas mileage to a premium. I figure going with the "smaller" tire diameter would help. Does anyone recommend running spacers with the 33's on 17" rims? I hear some people telling me to run 1.5" spacers to help with clearance issues and stability issues. Necessary? Unnecessary?

If your running stock rims you will need 1.5" spacers so a 12.5 wide tire won't rub the control arms.

If you don't push the limits how do you find them??

If I upgrade the tires, I think I am going to mount them to some ProComp wheels. I remember the whole +/- offset thing when I owned my 350Z and bought rims for that. Do you have to worry about the same stuff with the Wrangler? I'd like to avoid running spacers if it all possible. Would the ProComps afford enough clearance without the spacers to run 33's on 17's? Sorry if I sound dumb, :icon_crazy: I'm just not too well versed just yet.

I agree with the guys here. The stock rig is very capable, but is vulnerable. I would take care of that first...rocker protection and skids (like the evo protek system.) Recovery gear is a close second. Winch, straps, snatchblock, etc. After that, if you have any scratch left, maybe some tires and cut your fenders. I only have 33s, but had absolutely no trouble in Moab (I didn't do any of the crazy trails though.)

A stock sport can definitely tear up some trails. All I have done is switch out the tires with some bigger ATs. Running 31s instead of the 225s that came with it. Just work up to what you can and build up your comfort level.

if you plan on running the stock rims and 33's i would say you will need spacers. if your upgrading the rims 4.25 backspacing will work perfectly with no need for spacers. im running 32x10.5x16 with 4.25 backspacing and i have no issues and plenty of clearance.

Thanks for the vid comments:)
4.75 is common also and works fine with 33's

Anyone know what the backspacing is on the stock sixteens that come with the base sport?
