Google maps did find two routes between San Diego to Boulder City, NV which avoid highways. Naturally, it takes longer. There is no escaping that the routes pass through some of the least forgiving desert in the country.

There must be an alternate route, which is more scenic, but takes a lot longer. Unfortunately, all of the major highways out of San Diego are ugly.

We only eat out while traveling, or for very special occasions. While at home, there is no need since my wife is a good cook.

You will need quite a lot of solar cells (and sun) to run a heater. A good quality diesel heater would be wise, and save the electricity for other purposes.
