I’m pretty sure I’ve posted about how much I miss Southern California. The climate and natural beauty are truly hard to beat. However I just came across this article which really sums up California and why I cannot move back. Interestingly enough the author was from Virginia where I currently reside. Not a low tax state by any means so we have been looking at our options for when we retire in the next few years. I can say it will not be California. Anyway it’s a good read for a Saturday morning. Y’all that live there currently should check your blood pressure before you read this, then again after.

Californians tolerate high taxes but get terrible services. Citizens should demand better governance and accountability.

Yeah, beauty isn’t enough for me… it’s the ultra high taxes that goes to illegals and such, the blatant tyranny, unconstitutional laws, and the lack of representation that kills it for me. Our hang up is Robyn’s retirement… she started late in her career that if we were to leave now she’d have very little at retirement age. What we’re trying to understand now is what is the point where we’re actually making more with a lower tax and cost of living state that balances it all out.

I can totally see how real of a problem that can be.

Crime: Despite having roughly the same number of police officers per capita, California has a “crime index” that is 47% higher than Virginia’s, and California has the sixth-highest rate of violent crime of all 50 states. Virginia has the 14th lowest.

Education: If you’re a teacher, California is a great place to live. They are the highest paid in the nation and have the fourth-lowest student-to-teacher ratio. But if you’re a parent? Your children are getting screwed. Eighth-grade reading, math, science, and writing scores are significantly below the national average, while Virginia’s are significantly higher. Virginia ranks 7 in average SAT scores, and California comes in 23rd.

Infrastructure: Despite having the nation’s highest gasoline taxes, California ranks in the bottom three when it comes to road conditions, with more than 25% of its roads in serious need of repair. In Virginia, just 9% of its roads are in poor shape.

Opportunity: How much economic opportunity are California’s sky-high taxes buying? None. The state ranks dead last in U.S. News and World Report’s “opportunity” ranking. And it ranks 47th in the Rich States, Poor States ranking of economic outlook.

It has the highest unemployment rate in the country at 5.5%, the most people on welfare, and the most homeless people.

It has the most progressive income tax yet is the fifth-worst state when it comes to income inequality. (Virginia comes in 29th on tax progressivity and 22nd on income inequality.)

It is the least affordable state for housing. Virginia is 35th.

Fiscal responsibility. Incredibly, despite the fact that California is one of the highest-tax states in the nation, it ranks No. 42 in U.S. News and World Report’s ranking for fiscal stability.

but as soon as they get to full socialism and crown newsom king, everything will be better, they promised.

Sadly people get the government they deserve- or worse.

There is a theory taught at the JFK Special Warfare Center that deals with insurgencies.

This theory states that roughly 10% of a population is actively engaged in promoting something and 10% will be actively engaged in fighting against that thing. The remaining 80% are going to ‘go along to get along’ and simply hope to be on the winning side with minimal discomfort. In other words they want minimal disruption in their life and do not want to actually expend the energy to influence the outcome.

This theory is shown to be the case in the American Revolutionary War, the American Civil War, the conflict in AFG, the Iraq War, and many others.

What most people perceive as being ‘actively’ involved is not actually being actively involved.

On a related note while in Yosemite we overheard a Cali wife telling her Cali husband about how when she complained to her friend about high taxes her friend recommended she might consider Texas or another less expensive state. Her response was: “Fuck that!”

There are no victims- only volunteers.
