how have you been choosing where to go next? Is it whatever is cheapest?

Sometimes that is the case. We generally find affordable lodging or transportation then look at other things to see if we can make it work.
The Canada trip this year was just because I wanted to go. It was not cheap. I think I spent more than my pension payment for the month just in gasoline.
Other times we have something one of us wants to do and then search for other places to go on the way there or back.
The number one way we make it affordable is frequently staying in a more affordable place for a month or longer.
