Built not bought

Bought or built- I think the main concern is - know your vehicle, and know how to get your family safely off a trail if you break down.

Nothing else really matters.

Then how do you categorize EVO1? Technically Mel did the work on it with help I'm sure, but it was done in a shop by others help as well. So is both built and bought? Personally the whole "built not bought" thing is stupid to me. If anything it should be "bought then built" because everyone bought there rig, then built it. Regardless of who did the actual work. I've done all the upgrades on my jeep minus mounting and balancing tires. But there is a big difference between taking pride in the work you have done and trying to brag about doing the work yourself. I don't need a sticker, or a stupid saying, to make me feel better than other people about doing the work myself. All I care about is doing what I love and having people around me that have the same passion. If people have the money to pay an experienced professional to do it then more power to them. Wtf does this mean? I can see a guy buying a mall crawler from starwood being bought, I guess? Or is it the guy who makes his own parts that is built?
Or just a saying made up to sell stickers?

I think the guys have answered correctly, but my personal take on it means... " I couldn't afford the good one, so I built this... It kinda works"

My jeep is mostly "built" because I have no money.. That's it

My ride- 2001 power wheel, 11" plastic tires, upgraded battery, boat sides, custom bumpers, tow hooks, new paint.

IMO, bought means you went out and bought the mods, built means You designed and built them. For example, I could go out and drop some coin for a rear bumper that was made on a production line of sorts but instead I'm spending the weekend building my own because 1) I hate the idea of my ride looking like the Jones' and 2) I want that little sense of pride in doing my own work my own way.

I also think the saying was geared towards someone who buys an already built jeep. Already modded and ready to rock. Anyone who takes their jeep and transforms it into what they want in it, whether they paid a shop or did It themselves, built their jeep IMO.

Pretty sure evo1 along with all race cars are built not bought.

Actually, it was bought. Mel picked it up on craigslist, it was a trade-in at Starwood motors, sat on the lot for months and the dealer was having a hard time getting rid of it due to it not being what Starwood's customer base normally buys. It's seems the most common prospective customer complaints and questions were:

-"the axles looked too fat and/or bulky"
-"tires have too much sidewall"
-"no cup holders, really?"
-"what do you mean by 4 speed Atlas"
-"why does a manual valve body need to be shifted by me, and how do I do it"
-"these seats are heated/cooled and do recline?"
-"so these two Lowrance Chart Plotters cannot play DVDs?"
-"it looks like someone may have taken it offroad"

Mel said those were all the things you kept asking him while he was trying to concentrate on driving

Maybe it applies to all these thugs around here that steal cars to build tuners? They don't buy much..

Obviously. As I'm sure your aware the argument of built not bought is whether or not you did the work yourself or had someone else do it for you. And I agree with your statement as far as most professional level race vehicles, but there was a time when EVO1 was just a stock Sahara on a dealer lot that was BOUGHT, then it is was BUILT

If someone asks if I bought or built my jeep the answer is "yes"
