Yep, Time for Balljoints

Caught the Bug
Well, something over 40K on Stitch now, our JKU, looks like its time for new ball joints. After a recent wheeling trip, started hearing something metallic rattling, related to the suspension. The noise tends to occur when the suspension might be ‘floating’ or lightly loaded, like across a quick succession of bumps.

Steering’s still tight enough not to complain about, in and of itself (no notable slop). Yet I noticed a bit more tire-related shimmying after the latest rotation. Balancing the tires has helped. Hitting certain types of bumps it’s no longer as ‘confidence inspiring’ as I’d like though.

Crawled underneath: Found both tie rods loose enough I could easily flop them around. Now I know where the metallic rattling is coming from:). Loose enough they clang.

Stitch loves me—giving me something new to do :)

Agreed. I’ve not had them so loose in the past though as to be floppy or make noise when driving though. My experience is with larger trucks. I wouldn’t expect it much different with the Jeep though. Or is it?
