Where Is All the Dust Coming From?

Looking for ideas or personal experiences dealing with excessive dust permeating through and/around the rear tailgate on a 14 JKUR. 20190904_185533.jpg20190904_185602.jpg20190904_185553.jpg

The pics should give you an indication of the amount of dust coming through after a few miles along a dusty road. The jeep was detailed inside and out 2 days before the drive. The gasket around the tailgate is clean and undamaged. So is the gasket flap along the bottom edge of the rear window. I've tried to keep these components from cracking or drying out. I've already installed a strip of additional gasket material along the edge of the tailgate so that it contacts the OEM gasket lining the tailgate opening when the tailgate is closed.

I don't mind a little dust when the windows are open or the top is off. I get it. It's part of being outdoors. But this much dust driving down a dirt road, windows up and A/C on is something new. We put 120k miles on in just over 4 years. Even worked a job mapping BLM roads one summer with close to 10k miles offroad in 4 months. Moab on 3 occassions and driving any mountain or forest roads wherever we travel. This dust issue is recent.

Do I need to replace the gasket flap on the window? Anyone else experience this issue?

Thanks in advance.

Do you have the cabin fan on recirculation or pulling air from the outside? Perhaps the latter would create a bit of positive pressure that would help keep dust out? Shot in the dark.

I think if you’re driving on a dusty dirt road, you’re going to get dust in the car. It’s unavoidable.
