what do all the numbers in a tires specs actually mean?

hey,

so im looking at toyos as an example.

i can get 35 inch toyo m/ts in a few different specs:

35x12.50R-20LT
35x12.50R-18LT
35x12.50R-17LT
-15lt

...etc


what does the "-xxlt" actually mean, and how would that effect the on and off road drive of the vehicle? Because the lower the number goes the cheaper the tires are ;) but i dont wanna buy crappy tires either, ya know?

ah... never mind. i think this was a dumber question haha.

common sense just came to me, and im now assuming that it has to do with the rim size, am i right?

yea its rime size and i BELIEVE (i may be wrong) the LT stands for light truck

just in case the fallow up question is about metric meanings
255/75/17
255 is the measurement of the tire width in mm
75 is the percentage ratio of side wall height in reference to tire width(in this example 75% of 255 is 191.25mm which is 7.53")
17 is the rim size

you then add all the info together 7.53+17+7.53 to get your overall tire height of 32.06"
255mm= tire width of 10.04

1"=25.4mm

OR you could be lazy like I am 99.999% of the time and use sites like this
