SOCIAL MEDIA - Am I the Only One?

I don't TikTok, I don't Facebook, I don't Instagram, I do make videos and post them on YouTube but I don't YouTube. I literally have ZERO personal social media presence and rarely use any of them, if at all or at least, if I can help it. In fact, if I don't hear or see something in person, directly from people like you over drinks or dinner or even by text, email or phone call or hell, even by posts in an online community like this one, I absolutely have no idea what's going on with you or otherwise.

Needless to say, if you see something on social media and or post on it and then talk to me like I should know what's going on, I can almost guarantee you that I won't. Sorry, it's nothing personal.

That said, I was kind of wondering - am I the only one who's not plugged in?

I would love to hear where you're at with all this (y)

And I should note, I bring this up only because during Jeep Bash, I had a number of people talk to me about stuff I had no clue about but they assumed that I did or should and because it was posted about on social media.

Who was it? lol

I’m probably plugged in more than I want but i don't really do the social media thing. I used to get sucked in and realized by looking at screen time that I was wasting valuable hours and portions of the day that I could be doing anything else. Most importantly, spending time with my family.

LOL - sorry, I had a feeling that was coming and I posted a response at the same time as you.

Essentially, total strangers I meet and even friends that I haven't seen in a while. They come up to me and start talking about things like we were picking up where we left off on a conversation but I literally had no idea what they were talking about or referring to. When I stop and ask them to elaborate, their response is always - "it was posted on X, Y or Z social media site" and then look dumbly at me like I should know LOL

I have no Instagram, fb, x, TikTok either. Had a Facebook but shut it down about 7 years ago. Simply do not have the time to care about where or what you eat, view your selfie, or care to hear how the world wronged you. Life is peaceful w/o social media. Outside of wk i dont even like the phone.

I will add Alex has grown quite a bit with her Instagram/tiktok pages and she follows other influencers for different reasons and tells me about them (which I couldn’t care less) like she’s part of there life, so maybe that’s just how people are these days, which is kinda weird lol.

To follow people who just post up to say, "look at me - look at me" and then feel like you're a part of their life... I don't know. I really is kinda weird to me.

For me personally, I feel like I would need some kind of tangible connection. At least on forums and way before there was any social media, there was a genuine community and one that I can say is responsible for many of the ACTUAL and personal face to face friends that I have today.

I really only started using FB for family stuff and now mainly IG/FB for business. To be honest, if it wasn’t for the business stuff, I probably wouldn’t use it at all.
I'd be lying if I said we didn't have a business presence on IG/FB but even at that, just barely and Cindy reluctantly takes care of that.

Yea totally agree, what you have is special, we’ve known each other for a long time, and really only because meeting here initially. Many connections have been formed from being a part of this community and a place where people can gather, be themselves, connect and so much more. What you have will always trump IG or whatever in many ways, but especially real connection.

Zero social media other than here.

Friends and family act like I should know what's going on in their lives from social media, fuck that.

I had a friend angry at me because I did not reach out to them when his dad passed last year; I, with apologies asked if he called/texted me and I missed it, nope, he posted it on FB and I was supposed to know.

That pissed me off, I reminded him I don't do social media, zero and he knew that, while I was sorry to hear the news, if it's that important to him that I should know, use their phone in a meaningful way otherwise don't get mad because I didn't know.

Who the fuck posts something like that on social media?? for what? likes???

I am certifiably old school. I don't have any social media that I know of or care about. Oh wait! Unless you call Nextdoor Neighbor a social media. My wife signed me up and it is supposed to be for neighborhood communication. It primarily posts about porch pirates, missing pets, requests for help with a project. It is top heavy with individuals ready to give you judgmental opinions on any subject as if it is coming from God. Newspapers, TV Channels, Radio, they all have their biases, agendas, and points of view. I am usually in the dark as to what is going on in the world and it takes a lot of stress out of living.

Couldn’t agree with you more.

Also, this is an online community - NOT social media. People actually talk to each other here.

LOL, almost forgot about NextDoor I got kicked off Nextdoor because someone posted a reminder to feed all the feral stray cats over winter and I replied they were the issue why there were so many stray cats, also quoted city regulation that it was illegal to feed them. 🤣
