SoCal saltwater fishing

seeing eddies post regarding the orca sightings off of newport reminded me that the local saltwater season is getting ready to start up. Curious if there are any wayalifer's here that also fish the local islands and the San Diego fleet. Trips to Catalina for yellows and c-bass should start popping soon. Couple months to go before tuna start showing down south. Maybe we can get a few trips together with some members. Pics to follow I should warn that this hobby can be very addicting as well and it is not cheap. I have enough gear that I could prob buy a couple evo dtd's lol. Me and my father had a nice ocean rig for awhile, but it gets real expensive as well. 135 gallon fill up sucks...lol

I went for the first time for my birthday last year. It was pretty fun having only fished lakes growing up. I caught 3 fish but they were pretty decent sized. The big one was 32.5 pounds.

a few of the pics show the rig i used to co-own with my father. i have a ton of pics around of some BIG tuna that I have caught as well. if you have pics post em up. lets try to get a wayalife saltwater trip going here. even newbies that are willing to get sucked into another pricey hobby are welcome...lol

nice looks like a couple ling cod and a sculpin. those big lings are hard to get. they live in little holes in the rock and coral and when u hook em they duck back in and saw you off....lol really good eating though . congrats

Yup. I thought I was caught on something at first. Lol

I think I made fish tacos out of that. They were good!

Do you have your own boat?

me and my father owned a 24' seaswirl striper for about 5-6 years. it was a sweet rig. had a large fuel capacity, bait tanks, 16 mile radar, gps plotter, sonor, hardtop, fish wells, a cuddy cabin with bed, stove, sink, and a real porcelain head. thing was great. we would run local stuff outta davies launch on 2nd street. go anywhere from pv to newport and catalina to san clemente island. it got pretty expensive when i went back to school so we sold it. we had to pay for storage and thats a big issue. costs $200 a month and there are alot of months when it is sitting. now i take trips on the sport boats. i do alot of the small limited load trips. for san diego trips i usually get a spot on someones private charter. i frequent a fishing forum where charter masters will post up if they have an extra spot or two. they are GREAT trips, best service and usually really cool people. not like going on the straight up open party cattle boats. i'm spoiled after owning my own rig...lol

Not offshore, but I love to fly fish the surf. You never know what you're going to catch (but mostly I've caught surf perch)! Being from Tucson, I've only done it a couple of times...I'll be in SD again in May for a conference and will definitely be brining my rod.
