Recent Federal portable fuel container regulations?

I currently have a Pak Rax window mounted fixture on which I intend to mount a 5 gallon Rotopax style gas container on my Wrangler. I am about to depart on a 2 month trip from Maine to the West. Any thoughts on how this bright red container mounted on the passenger side of my jeep is going to be viewed by LEOs on my trip. I am concerned about being stopped and told to get rid of it.

Only thing I could see them maybe getting you on is if it’s blocking your view of other vehicles when making lane changes. 🤷‍♂️

I don’t know one officer who would give a care in the world about your spare fuel container or how it’s carried.

In Oregon you cannot carry more than ten gallons in spare gas...as was told to me from a police officer when I was pulled over about 5 years ago (not because of my containers)...

I’m pretty sure the federal law is 450 pounds of gas is legal without hazmat certain and stuff. Which is why people don’t have huge transfer gas tanks in the back of their trucks. It’s like 75 gallons or something.

I think 400 gallons is the limit before hazmat is needed. Had a Pete with 4 100 gallon tanks and was told it was the limit but the was several years ago and I’ve slept since then so my memory may be faded a bit

The portion of the 2020 rules that I am referring to are the requirements that require a spring loaded filler, a flame retarding screen and no vent orfice. As far as I know these things are missing on all Rotopax style gas cans. I will be externally transporting two 5 gallon Rotopax cans on my upcoming 15,000 mile overlanding trip. Neither have theses now Federally mandates items. I suppose that they are grandfathered in but ???

I’m not sure why you care. No ones gonna pull you over for a secured gas tank. And I believe you’re referring to manufacturing requirements not owner requirements.

I wouldn't worry about it. The spring loaded filler is for the cans with a fixed spout so that it closes and doesn't vent into the atmosphere. The vent is the same and rotopax don't have vents so your good there. As stated on their website be sure to vent your fuel packs if changing elevation or temperature rapidly. The screen is most likely in the filler necks as well. They are "flame retarding" but also work well for keeping out the leaves and grass if you buy at a low grade fuel station. Take a shot, yell FTG and roll out. They don't own you anymore.

Don't drive into a Las Vegas casino parking area with one of the flat packs in your Jeep. They get mad.

Other than that I have never had a problem.

I have one of those new eco terrorism gas tanks for filling my mower. That spring loaded filler thing broke the first time I used it. It's a piece of shit. It's likely not even sealed now anyways. I'll probably buy another Rotopax tank to fill my mower.

Can't agree more. These federal mandated gas cans are the most irritating and useless gas cans ive come across. My blood pressure goes up every time I have to use one.

I take the spout off and use a funnel. Goddam things are impossible.
