On the Edge of a Cliff - Seatbelts ON or OFF?

Have you ever been driving along side a crazy scary shelf road like the Intimidator on Flat Iron Mesa or maybe the switchbacks on Blackbear Pass and thought - maybe it might be a better idea to leave the seat belts off? Here's a crazy video of a guy in China that was able to jump out of his truck through, through the passenger side window and just before the whole thing went over a cliff. Check it out

What do you think? When you're on a cliff with death lurking just inches away, do you leave your seatbelt on or off so that you can get out quick like this guy?

Wow. Lots to think about. But if he hadn't have made the jump, you'd want to be strapped in for sure. That's awesome though that he survived.

I guess i don't know, after watching this id be inclined to say seat belt off but at the same time i wouldn't want to fall out if the jeep was just off camber wit no doors but not going to roll. I know one thing for sure tho is that going through an obstacle something like that it would be hard to even keep Alex along for the ride!!

I think the moral of the story is don't overload your truck and drive on shelf roads.

My kids are strapped in so I'm going to be too. Would rather all die together than selfishly jump out and watch my family go rolling down a mountain.

LOL!! It's a tough one for sure. Me, I always like to have my seatbelt on if only because I wouldn't feel comfortable without it but after seeing this video, I wonder if I'd have enough time to get it off and get out like this guy. Of course, I don't even know if that thought would be going through my mind

Here is my rule. If I look down the cliff and think I will survive the fall in the Jeep with the seatbelt on, I leave the seatbelt on.

If I look down the cliff and it is way too high, and I think the Jeep will be a pancake and I will be the syrup seatbelted inside, I take my seatbelt off. Who knows, in this case maybe I will get tossed out and land on my feet and not get squished.

On, mostly because I doubt I could get out like that if something happened. Something about being old, overweight and out of shape makes me think I can't move like that.

This brings back memories of the convo we had with Adam on cliffhanger  :cheesy:

Friend of mine rolled his Jeep a couple of hundred feet into a canyon was belted and walked away with just a few scratches and bruises. His 2 dogs were tossed and survived with minor injuries. Its just a roll of the dice in this case the roll bars served their purpose.

Man that is a hard one but I think I would probably keep it on I most always jeep with more then just me in my jeep so I know we all wouldn't be able to get out and if I have a full cage and like Brute said a 5 point harness you might walk away with some gnarly wounds but will still survive.

I'd be grabbing my seat so hard with my ass that belts probably wouldn't matter - I'd be stuck in there like Velcro!

BUT, if you pause the vid at .11 sec in, WTF was this dumbass thinking trying to get that truck through that mess?

I'll take my chances inside and belted. The alternative is maybe getting out in time? Or worse yet, being halfway out when it rolls over and I get squished? No thanks.

I have to agree with Ddays, my ass would be putting a permanent crease in the seat, and if bailout became necessary I'm certain that a doughnut sized piece of the seat would come with me. [emoji90]

Lol! I know I would have the seat belt on! This past end of summer run at Windrock, we had a guy take a 2 door up the stair steps and then decided to come down the stair steps. Kind of forgot about the change in the balance of the jeep! As the jeep started to tip forward out came his leg to balance the jeep! If he would have had his belt on he would have tumbled end over end down the steps. Makes me pucker just thinking about it!

My thoughts exactly... Before Kids (BK) I would ride without it on. I am sure the chances of successfully jumping out, of an XJ, were slim to none. But when you're young there is nothing you cannot do. Now I stay buckled up.
