Just got bit by a dog

Walking up my street and 3 cattle dogs come tearing out of this house barking. They charge me, circle me, and one bites my leg. I start yelling at them and getting aggressive back which makes them back off long enough for some lady to come out and yell for them to come back. She gave me her contact info. I've called my physician assistant friend who is calling in an antibiotics prescription for me. She said as part of that she has to report the dog bite.

Any advice on what to do? I'm mostly just pissed. What if my 2 year old boy had been walking with me and they attacked him? How far should I push this?

This is the bite, with my work pants rolled up. Glad I wasn't wearing shorts.

That shit ain't on, I would take it as far as you can, as you said imagine if it was one of your kids.

People should keep their damn dogs under control.

I would definitely push hard. I agree, too many people don't have control of their dogs and it angers me too. I would do whatever you can to make sure the owner of the dogs realizes this is very serious.

i'm a dog lover and own 2 dogs and if that happened to me I would file a complaint and push back hard.

the fact they got out and immediately attacked you is a bad sign.

What if your 2yo had been with you? do you think you would've been able to deter them while trying to protect your kid? or worse, if your 2yo was with you and as they often do, was running ahead of you because it's fun for them.

File the report

Does the dog have its rabies vaccines and everything else? Make sure to report this, and I hate to say it but if the records are not correct....the dog will be put down to test for rabies. A dog bite is a very serious thing.

I had to go through this with my mom, and it was a friends dog who was never at the vet for years.

I had an employee get bit by a dog last year. We were called to house for a service call. My employee walked to the front door and right then a dog came running out of the half opened garage and clamped onto his leg. He punched the dog to get it to let go and called me and 911.
I showed up and he was bleeding pretty bad. He needed 6 stitches. We filed police report and they said it was the dogs 3rd bite on someone in 2 years. They then said there is nothing they can do because the dog was on its own property.
I talked to the homeowner/dog owner and he said he was sorry but wouldn't do anything else. What sucks is that my employee was off for 4 days per doctors orders. I ended up paying him out of pocket for those days because why should he have to suffer. Cost me $1150 plus the hospital bill. I have med insurance but I still paid what was out of pocket.
It sucks. I should have shot the dog and beat the owners ass. And I would have if the police weren't standing there at the time.

One of the many reasons I carry even at home. There is no place for aggressive dogs like that unless it is a trained protection dog under the control of its handler which obviously wasn't the case.

Get your meds. Get LE involved for sure.

Thanks everyone. Called their vet to verify and turns out the dog isn't up to date on any of his vaccines.

My next call was animal control. I'm pressing charges, the dog will be in quarantine for 10 days, and the owners will be issued a ticket. They also will have to cover all my medical expenses unless they want to take it to trial.

Ugh. Not what I needed right now.

I would definitely press charges!
Three of my pit bulls have been rescues, two of them had fighting back grounds. I was always ready to have them put down , if they did anything like this. Fortunately after some training I didn't have any issues. I don't think it's at all necessary or acceptable for dogs to be overly aggressive.

I spend a lot of time with cattle dogs and they can be extremely protective and aggressive if they feel their space is being violated.
But you were just walking down the street and did nothing wrong. I blame the dog owners on this. It is not the dogs fault, they are not made to be house dogs, they are working dogs that need to be worked. There a reason there called cattle dogs.
People suck!
I would definitely pursue the attack for sure, just remember the dogs were doing what their bred to do.

Animal control officer came. Took my statement and pics of the bite (glad it didn't get my balls). Now she's over getting a statement from the owner.

Man that pisses me off. It's always 'never acted like that before'. And you're completely right about your son. Kids get mauled to death on a regular basis because of this. Call animal care services and they will investigate and possibly pursue charges and make sure the dogs aren't rabid.

Edit just saw your post

Their homeowner's insurance will cover those expenses while also considering your pain and suffering. You will get a good settlement if you are easy to work with and willing to negotiate. Call me anytime if you need help with that process, so long as it is not with Farmers Insurance.

Good luck and sorry this happened to you.

Wouldn't I have to sue to get pain and suffering? Animal control officer made it sound like I just money for documented medical bills. I'm not looking to make money off this thing, mostly just don't want this to ever happen again.

This is totally about the kids... or the elderly. As a father I think about it all the time when I see dogs roaming... Imagine you did nothing and the next time the victim didn't get by so lucky.... you did the right thing.

Definitely report it. Many states have dog bite statutes which essentially give an owner a pass (under criminal law) from the first bite. After the first reported bite, the dog will be deemed a "dangerous animal" which then imposes additionally burdens on the owner (like keeping the dog tied off even in their own yard). The penalties for bite 2 then become much more severe. As for pain and suffering, 3x's your documented medical bills is a realistic out of court settlement amount to shoot for with the insurance company. That is on top of your actual medical bills.

We have some real dumb dog owners here in San Diego. Homeless pricks with pit bulls that run loose. Piss me off. I called animal control and filed a complaint against the prick with the pit bull as soon as it stepped on our lawn. I used the address of his friend who's couch he crashed on all of the time since he was there every day. A guy had to grab a 2x4 from his truck to scare the dog off since it charged him.
