Is my tranny leaking?

There could be a slight leak in the oil pan gasket and the oil might be getting blown back onto the trans while you drive.

Ah. Yea. I thought there could be something else besides that but the oil pan is good. That was the first thing I looked at when I first went crawling under there.

Something like a rear main seal is what I was thinking for oil.

Based on your photo, I think tranny pan gasket is the likely source though and wicked up the tranny through the dirt accumilation. Probably took some time too.

A clean area really helps to pinpoint the source. You should see my 85 CJ7. I think there is more oil on the outside than the inside. That is a very slow, very budget overhaul in the works. It is harder when it is a 1000 miles away.

Checked all the bolts. All were good except one in the center on the front. It clicked at 14.5 ft/lbs but fairly easily kept turning. The others didn't do that. The sump pan is still clean. I ran my fingers over it and nothing gets on my finger. Even the dark area above feels dry. I think I will still do some PM on it when I do the skid. Anyone know about that...how it attaches?
