DIY Metal Grab Handles?

Caught the Bug
Looked around, but didn't find much in the forum or on the web. I started playing around with some 3/4" conduit:

Looking to make a hoop that attaches to the "A" pillar and roll bar. The conduit seems to be plenty rigid for my 190lb frame. Looking for some input so feel free to chime in.

Thanks guys!

This was just some scrap that was laying around and it was in rough shape before I started. I used a conduit bender. I'm just playing around for now.

I'm thinking more like this:

IMG_4211.jpg

Off the "A" pillar at 90 degrees, 45 to 60 degree bend, 4" straight, 30 to 45 degree bend to come into the roll bar at 90 degrees.

Only problem is that is as tight as your gonna bend a 90 without kinking it... i bent that as a 90 at first then started a tight concentric bend u could just offset it out away from the a pillar

I mean that the ends would butt against the "A" pillar and roll bar at 90 degrees. I will probably end up with one bend around 60 and the other bend around 45 degrees.

The latch positioning isn't easy and it's time consuming. But a lot of patience goes a long way.

Unless you're really set on making them, Synergy has those exact grab handles and they're pretty good

Synergy does make a nice grab and if mine don't workout I will probably get a set. For me it's not about getting it done fast, it's a hobby. I like to make the non-critical items if I can.

I like diy stuff, but for $35 these are working just fine for me so far.

I've had a set of these in my Amazon cart for more than a year now and even started a thread to ask opinions on them. I just like the looks of the closed loop so I'm going to press on.

I have the Grabars right now and they are a quality product. Don't get the knock off China ones as they are pretty cheap and I returned those. I too like the closed loop and looking at getting the Synergy ones and perhaps paint matching them.

Looks like there's two different versions of the Synergy ones. View attachment 251410 View attachment 251411

That's interesting. I have seen the more rounded ones like in your 2nd picture. The flatter design in your 1st picture I hadn't seen before and boy, they are really close to the shape I'm going for. The only thing that I don't like is the length. They look a lot longer than they need to be.

I messed around with this some more today. Made another prototype out of 3/4" EMT using a 3/4" bender. I wasn't thrilled with the larger radius of the bends and I'm not quite there with the desired shape or fit. I'm going to try the 1/2" bender again using the same 3/4" material and see if I can tighten it up to achieve the shape that I'm looking for. The 1/2" bender will also "saddle" the corners which I like, but makes it harder to prevent kinking. Good thing the material is cheap or in my case, free! [emoji38]
