SOA isn't bad if done right. My CJ5 was built two owners ago, with Dodge truck axles on SOA and a set of torque arms was put in on the top of the axle. This stops the axle wrap. 
 
I agree on keeping the exhaust inside the frame rails. Mine is fender exit, and I'm gonna have to move it one of these days, as I have no way to add sliders unless it's just the kind that only go on the tub. Even then, the exhaust would take the hit.
