    Steeper descents dangerous behavior

Now, that's a thought I'd not had--that the Tazer itself might be causing the problem. I'll have to remove it and take a test drive tomorrow, if I get the time. I can pretty easily replicate the descent problem, I'm so used to it, and I'm camped in high mountains so plenty of downgrades. And...

    Steeper descents dangerous behavior

No, friend, my mistake in not mentioning that important fact. This all takes place as I use the transmission in "manual" mode, thus locking it into an appropriate gear to descend the hill. Whether pavement or dirt. I can watch the 'mpg' monitor on the dash as we descend. When it's reading '99' I...

    Steeper descents dangerous behavior

No, this problem is completely unrelated to Hill Descent. It is some component(?) actually throttling up the engine on downhills, causing the driver to have to apply braking force to slow the vehicle. Thus the brakes are having to work against the engine itself to slow, in addition to the hill...

    Steeper descents dangerous behavior

Oh, understand about not enough posts. I use and like Hill Descent mode and have used it on some pretty steep descents. But, I can see that on loose/slippery surfaces, no it couldn't do so much there. But the issue we've been discussing happens even in 2WD regular driving. Really irritating...

    Steeper descents dangerous behavior

But this can happen in any gear, HI or LO range. As I recall ABS is turned off when you enter LO range, but it happens just the same. My regular dealer is not good, and my Jeep is my regular driver. They're pretty clueless, and I'm not leaving it with them. Other than this, and a couple of...

    Steeper descents dangerous behavior

Hill Descent Mode is useless above about 5 mph. This problem happens above that speed, where your engine should be holding back. But the opposite happens, and something (engine computer?) is literally throttling UP the engine. Firm foot braking by the driver is needed to stay safe. I'm the...

    Steeper descents dangerous behavior

I am the original poster, so thanks for posting. It's somewhat encouraging to see someone else having this problem. You have my empathy. That said, my '18 JLUR still has it, it's VERY annoying, verging on hazardous, and I've found no way around it.

YEA or NAY : Computer Controlled Electronic Jeep Components

I agree & also have a Tazer. It's a weird feeling to be 4-wheeling & feel the Jeep "do things" on its own I didn't ask it to. I prefer most all the computer & electronic things not to operate while I'm off-roading. Carol

HALF Doors or NO Doors - What Say You?

Well, I'm embarrassed to confess here that I'm the sole voter for full factory doors. I'll crawl down under my desk when I'm done. I'm just out at all hours and in all kinds of weather. My JLUR is my only driver, my home is a motorhome. I like to feel able to keep expensive tools, and my...

VIDEO : Doorless & Topless Snow Wheeling Fun

Thanks Eddie, that helps! I'm a desert person, not in snow often at all, more sand. But I've always wondered the best way to proceed in snowy conditions if I find myself there. Love your videos, keep them coming!

VIDEO : Doorless & Topless Snow Wheeling Fun

A snow newbie here. So I assume the bigger tires are better on snow, as in sand? Also, what air pressure is best for doing that? What percentage of the time were lockers needed? Thank you

    Steeper descents dangerous behavior

I will try and test the HDC (Hill Descent Control) tomorrow. I originally saw a YT video stating HDC could only be used in 1st gear LO range. But a snippet from a Jeep manual I just read online tonight says not so, that it will take over shifting of the transmission and braking to hold the...

    Steeper descents dangerous behavior

As a comparison, my Liberty weighed around 5K as this JLU does. It's engine was a 2.8L 4-cylinder diesel. So quite a bit less engine for braking.

    Steeper descents dangerous behavior

The reason I know it's throttling up the engine is that this Jeep has the new digital gauges that give so much information. I put it on the display that shows instantaneous mpg. I find if I drive by that I get better mileage, but that's on the pavement. So as I begin descending the 'mpg' gauge...

    Steeper descents dangerous behavior

No, I haven't. Mainly because I read that mode is only available in 4LO/1st gear. So I'd be crawling. I think top speed in Hill Descent mode is up to 4mph? That's just a guess since 1st is so low. The downgrades I'm running are [guessing] 10-15%, rocky, washboarded, with switchback curves. 3rd...

Oh sorry I forgot that. Yes, always on those hills.

I've been a member here for a while and enjoy learning from others' experience. I'm a senior, but have Jeeped all my life, been in an active Jeep club when I was younger, etc. I got my 2018 Jeep JLU Rubicon, 3.6V6, 8-speed auto transmissiion, as my retirement dream vehicle. I RV and tow my Jeep...

    Glad to be here!

I've jeeped since the 1970's & was in a Jeep club, but lately got myself a 2018 JLU Rubicon as my everyday vehicle RVing. I tow it behind the motorhome. Back to my roots, you'd say. I'm enjoying learning about the new Jeeps, so different from my CJ-5 in the 70's, and it's great to read the posts...
