The Maintaining and Building of Jan the WJ

Got everything pressed out and ready. There was a little surface rust so I did a quick grind/sand/paint. Parts are now showing delivery for tomorrow!

Alright, made some small progress last night. I got the arm out and the ball joint out. It was totally destroyed. I got one of the bushings pressed out then the second the center fell through. I've got time to get it out though because the new parts have been delayed until Friday.

    Selecting a Mig welder.

The only real downside that I know of with stick welding is that it's kind of messy. Lots of spatter and slag to clean up. For welding a trailer I think it'd be fine. Good advice. Practice practice practice.

Yeah, that's a bit more than the $60 I spent  The bushings I'll have to press in, but the ball joint is in the bracket already. I guess I'll still have to press it into the a-arm though. Like this: I've got a little shop press that should work though.

OK, everything when together great and thankfully the front end is doing well, but naturally there were more unexpected surprises. I went to turn the key and nothing happened. The battery was at 6 volts  so it seems I still have a voltage leak. I got it charged back up after a few hours...

Getting close! Welded them on last night and put a coat of paint on. Still not real pretty welds, but I think I'm improving. Once I turned off the auto-set wire feed and set it manually it got better. I know these perches are a lot more stout than the originals though :D I should be able to...

    The Butters JK Build

I picked up a new Millermatic a couple of days ago and needed some extra practice. I decided I would try and re-do the rubicon swaybar stabilizer bracket that didn't work out before. I cut the old stabilizer arm off and welded it back on at a new angle to rotate the swaybar up higher. It now...

The Maintaining and Building of Jan the WJ

Well, thanks to my new Millermatic I'm making more progress. I know it's not pretty, but it should get the job done. Considering I've never welded before, I don't think it turned out too bad :idontknow: I practiced a bit the day before on some of the scraps I cut off for the base, but...

Got the rear done, making progress on the front. Looking at a Millermatic 141 or a Lincoln 140C to finish the job...

Thanks, I'll probably see if I can work something out to fix this one. Maybe some 0.25 steel and capped pipe to get something like this: Then I'll have to borrow a welder or finally spring for one for my garage. I can't even count how many times I wished I had one...

So I went ahead and started, but I got a nasty surprise. I haven't worked on WJs much, but I'm pretty sure the spring perch shouldn't look like this: Or this: Not really sure what to do at this point...

Alright, the battery terminals I picked up from the auto parts store are in. Here's the run down: I couldn't find good ring terminals in a 6-8 guage (which I think is what the WJs cables are) only a 2 guage, so I connected both wires for each terminal to one 2 gauge each. It worked out pretty...

X2 for the Canon. We have the same one as well, and though I don't know much about the Nikon, I know the Canon has been great to learn on. Here's a couple taken with the Canon Rebel about a month after we bought it at night, when it really shines compared to a camera phone:

Ok, I've been having some continuing power problems. If she sits for more than a few days the battery is dead as a door nail. If driven regularly there's no issues. The alternator charges between 13.5 and 13.7 volts at idle. The battery is fairly new (purchased 10/2016) and charges and tests...
