good question, I always wondered about those too. I have one or two in my line. I pulled out a full size bronco with the kink right in the middle of the line and it didnt seem to make a difference. For peace of mind though its on my to replace list.
There is a small chunk or maybe welding splatter on the shaft. Its too hard to tell if its raised or recessed. It keeps tearing my the seals and causing oil to drain out. Company litature said repair damage shafts before rebuilding, so I assume some things are repairable? Just wondered if...

tried to replicate the noise with front axle off the ground no luck. locked it and had one tire touching to give it some resistance while i rotated the other and nothing. took the warn locking hub out, looked fine no shavings, operated correctly. back to the drawing board
I dont know if i can replicate it with tires off as it still only does it under load. I was able to drive up and down two hills with no noises until i got to the third hill. Went about 35mph on flat then turned the corner hit the hill and bam.

I dont knos what is typical but I'm at 40 go 50k miles on this shaft not a whole lot but its only use has been pretty tough rock crawling on a heavy heavy wj
