One of my coworkers 392 was stolen overnight from a hotel parking lot. He had been in town for a few days on business and walked out this morning to an empty parking spot with broken glass. I don't have many details yet but I'm curious to learn from the forum about what you do when traveling to deter or bolster the security on your Jeeps. Evidently it's not extremely difficult to build a key fob cloning device that can connect to the OBD ll port to program a blank fob, or capture a signal from someone's fob as another method.

Z-Automotive JL Mini, they've updated the firmware so you can require a pin code to be entered before it can be driven, also has a carjack mode.

Got a few more details. The small window on the driver side rear door was popped out in tack, no broken glass. Suspect the hood was opened and battery disconnected to remove power. Transfer case shifted to neutral and pulled onto a trailer. The Jeep had a kill switch installed and was in the disabled position. Eight other vehicles in the area were also stolen overnight.
 
The stolen 392 was located yesterday in Shreveport LA, about 70 miles away. Condition unknown, being transported back to the owner. Will be interesting to learn what his options will be with insurance company.

Glad he is getting it back, at least there is a chance it’s not badly damaged.

Auto theft should be like horse theft in the Wild West, a hanging offense. ☠️

Since my office is in Houston, where crime is rarely punished, I have a couple layers of protection. My Tazer is set up with the pin code, and locked in their steel security box. I added a hidden kill switch, hood locks, and rotated the horns behind the grill so the wires are harder to cut. Still, if a pro wants it, it will disappear.

the more you can slow them down, the better the chances they will leave it as time is a car thieves' enemy
 
Update.... The 392 has been returned, no leads on the thieves, but it now looks like they connected something to the OBD2 port to defeat the security and drive it away. It was found abandoned with no fuel in the tank. No evidence it was taken off-road, with the exception of running it into some bushes where it was found. The owners local dealer has it, initial inspections are not finding mechanical or structural damage. It will need some repaint, and replacement of numerous broken or damaged/scratched parts. He's going to install a locking cover for the OBD2 port for additional deterrent as well as hiding an AirTag on it.

Glad they found it and it’s not totally trashed! If he can afford a 392 he can afford the $300 a year Jeep/Sirius Guardian package that alerts you when it’s stolen and tells you where it is at all times. Just sayin. 🤷🏼‍♂️
 
Glad it was found, and hopefully with minimal damage. I may need to look into some theft deterrent mods. In the words of Mr T... "I pity the fool that tries to steal my ride"
 
Thought I would post a follow up on this event. The 392 in question has been repaired/restored by a dealer local to the owner. I don't have the full list of items replaced but include the wire harness for the GPS antenna, the dash gauge cluster, along with interior trim pieces and seats that were damaged/scratched from the break in along with driver side rear door window and trim. Some repainting but not the entire Jeep. The total cost for the parts, labor, etc was about $15k. Insurance covered it.

It appears the thieves knew what they were doing, broke a window to gain entry, started cutting wires to disable GPS, alarm, etc., and used some tech to get the Jeep running. However, with no functioning gauge cluster they didn't know how much fuel was in the tank. Turned out to be about 50 miles worth (Isn't that about 1/4 tank for a 392? 😁). It was found about that far out of town. The guess is they drove it off the highway into the weeds when the fuel ran dry.

The owner is a picky car guy and says he is satisfied with the quality of the work performed. This 392 is a pavement princess and doesn't know what dirt looks like. One of the security measures he has now installed is a 4122 Kill Switch (link). This setup replaces the starter relay on the fuse block with one that has a remote switch wired to it. I got to thinking about this after watching their promo video and I guess if I had to leave my Jeep somewhere in public like a hotel parking lot overnight it would be easy enough to just remove the starter relay and take it with me, maybe a 2 min process.

Anyway, the owner is happy to have his Jeep back, and realizes if someone wants bad enough they'll get it, he's hoping to provide enough deterrent to get thieves to pass for one less protected.
