Made a Rookie Mistake but Got Lucky

It really was all that Cindy and I could do to not get out, hit the trails and test out the new Ohlins shocks that we installed on our Jeep 392. Fortunately, we were finally able to make some time, planned a route across Nevada and the following are some of the pics that we took from our trip.

For better or for worse, this trip turned into a last minute kind of thing but then, so many of our trips are like that. Needless to say, we got a late start but made sure to ditch the pavement the first chance we got.

Being monsoon season, the winds picked up, the skies darkened up and you really could smell rain in the air. So, we decided to hop back on the highway and make our way to one of our favorite saloons.

By the time we hit the road again, the wind was howling and the rain was pouring down down all the way to our home for the night.

We started out the following morning by getting in an early morning hike.

Back on the trail, we continued to make our way further to the east and enjoy all beauty that Northern Nevada has to offer.

And... that's when this happened.
20230726134428-8f2e11e3.jpg

Fortunately, we weren't too far from a main road but still very far from anything or anyone.
20230726134427-58696848.jpg

And... that's about when I started to realize that I literally packed nothing for this trip. Being so used to driving our 392 stock and thinking we'd just be exploring easy trails, I didn't pack a tire plug kit (not that it would have helped), I didn't pack a bottle jack (never needed it stock), didn't pack my inReach satellite communicator and only had the most basic of my tools and really, just by chance. It literally was the most rookie thing I've done in a very long time. Of course, to make matters worse... 🤪

Obviously, we had our factory scissor jack to work with but from very real and personal experience, I have found them to be dangerous to use on a lifted Jeep running 37" tires or bigger. The problem with them is, you have crank them up really really high to get your tire off the ground and this makes them very unstable. ANY shifting of the Jeep WILL cause them to buckle and collapse and that's the reality I was struggling with here.
20230726134431-08b6ce75.jpg

Making the decision to carefully go higher... listen to the jack creak... hope that it'll hold.
20230726134433-f16a26e0.jpg

Fortunately, I got real lucky and was able to get the tire high enough to remove. I got even luckier in that I had a torx bit to remove the stupid plastic spare tire lock as for some reason, our 392 didn't come with a tool kit LOL. Here's me getting the spare installed.
20230726134438-b300b305.jpg

With the spare mounted on the tailgate, we decided that it would be better to just head for home as doing anymore real testing would be pushing our luck.
20230726134451-19e58ed0.jpg

Needless to say, I hope you can be patient and understanding for our delay in getting a proper test and review of the Ohlins shocks we installed. I can tell you that we do have a new tire on order and hope to get back at it as soon as we can.

And, if there's a lesson to be learned here - ME SPECIFICALLY REMINDING MYSELF HERE, you may not always get so lucky and it pays to always go prepared. Period. (y)

Yup, I have a tool kit in every vehicle. Even the wife's car. Because you never know.

Been there getting caught without the optimum tool for the vehicle and situation.
Glad you guys got through it with no issues.

The statistics for diver fatalities are revealing…experienced divers make up a far too high percentage of them…we tend to get a bit relaxed with prep for something we have done for a long time. A great lesson here…

Makes total sense to me. We literally just picked up, left and didn't give it another thought. It was only until I realized that I didn't have a better jack that also realized that I didn't have a whole lot of anything else. If the jack had failed like I have seen happen many times before even on my own Jeep and even almost happened this time around (Jeep started to shift and I had to reposition and start over again), we would probably still be out there LOL.

What the hell did you hit?
So, it's really stupid and really, another reminder of how unforgiving Northern Nevada can be. The trail we were exploring was really narrow and very brushy, lots of low lying pine nut and cedar trees that made it really difficult to see what was hiding behind the foliage. Anyway, I literally was creeping along at about walking speed or even less trying to carefully work my way through the thicket when I heard a loud PSSSSSSS!! I stopped immediately, backed off and the sound actually stopped. Hoping upon all hope that the puncture was on the tread, we got out and was disappointed to see it was on the sidewall.

Being that the tire was still holding air and that changing out a tire where we were would be very difficult if not impossible, we decided to drive on the tire until we could get to more level ground. Amazingly, the tire held and only blew out once we got safely down the mountain.

Wow. Scary stuff. Glad you got your spare on though. Did you guys have enough water if you were stuck for awhile?
I think the scariest moment was when I first started going up with the jack and then saw and heard the whole Jeep start to shift - like it was about to go over. Fortunately, I was looking for this possibility and was able to quickly lower the jack before disaster struck. At this point, Cindy had asked what we would have done if the jack failed? Fortunately, we didn't have to resort to other options LOL

As far as water goes, yeah, we had enough to last a bit and while it may have given us an upset tummy, there were also a LOT of natural springs in the area with tons of water being pumped out of them.

Water is the key when you are in the desert, I think. Especially when traveling with old furry 4-legged family members.

Glad everything worked out.

Wow, you guys were very lucky! I have gone out before and forgot important things and only realized it when it was too late and luckily didn’t need them. I have a few outing-specific lists now and I check them before leaving. I’m glad you too were able to get home safely! 👍
