So, earlier in the month, I made a somewhat tongue-in-cheek post about the AUTONOMOUS WHEELING that Stellantis featured in their new "Zero Emission Freedom" video and at the time, Brute had asked the following question...

Who's next? As in, what country will own the iconic and all American automaker, Jeep? And, my answer to him was, China.

Now, some may think that I was just being facetious but in fact, I was being sincere. While Stellantis is a 50-50 cross-border merger between the Italian-American conglomerate, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and the French PSA (Peugeot Citroën) Group, 14% of PSA is owned by Dongfeng Motor Corporation. For those of you who don't know who the Dongfeng Motor Corporation is, they are a Chinese state-owned automobile manufacturer headquartered in Wuhan, Hubei, China and are one of the "Big Four" Chinese automakers. It should also be noted that Dongfeng Peugeot-Citroën (formerly Dongfeng Peugeot-Citroën Automobile Co., Ltd. or DPCA) is an equally owned Chinese joint venture between the automobile manufacturers Dongfeng Motor Corporation and Stellantis. This joint venture has primarily manufacturered automobiles in China but I have a feeling thing are going to change.

With that said, I'd be grateful if you could cast your vote and let me know how you feel about Jeep being owned in part and maybe someday, entirely by a state-owned Chinese automobile manufacturer?

I'm happy to have bought the Jeeps we have WHEN we did. We plan on getting another for our kids but it will likely be a YJ or CJ. Something with a manual trans and hopefully carbureted so the kids can know where automobiles came from and how they used to work. The way automobile companies are going in this country, I don't see myself buying another new one. It's sad really. But our government continually makes it more difficult for companies to have Freedom so the companies move overseas or sell to someone overseas.
 
That has the potential to push many to the Bronco...

I guess I will have to wait and see to decide for myself. Do I like the idea? No. But if quality improves or at least stays the same I wouldn't have a problem with it.

How about if most of the parts come from China but is still assembled here in the USA. Would that still be okay with you?

Our government hasn't made it easy for any company here in America to say here. Some in the ruling class have flat out said that "manufacturing jobs were not coming back" to America and that it we should be okay with it.
 
I haven’t done any research on this (yet), but let’s be honest. Where are all the electronics already coming from for them? How about the steel? It’s likely most of it already comes from overseas. As long as we have U. S. Quality control, I guess I’d be alright with it. But I’ll really cross that bridge when I get to it.

Yup, you are right. And, I'm not gonna lie, I haven't been thrilled with the QC at Jeep for a while now. My 2007 JKUR was maybe one of the last that I bought of which was mostly trouble free. My 2012 had a LOT of problems, mainly with the engine and right from the get go. My brand new 2021 JL Sport had transmission leaks right from the factory and this is to say nothing about wavy body panels, paint quality or issues with the infotainment system. In a lot of ways, I think we've been at that bridge for a while now.

I would love it if Jeep was assembled and manufactured in the USA. However you take what you can get at this point. Ram diesel trucks have been made in Mexico since like 1995. So at what point does it become an issue? When they ship it from China?

Can't speak for RAM but as of 2019, the Jeep Cherokee was the most American Car of the Year with 72% of it's parts coming from domestic sources. The only thing I could find on Wrangler was from 2011 and at the time, 82% of of it was made from domestic sources. Both are still made at the TAC in Ohio.

Sadly your right with QC. I’ve noticed it across the board from many manufacturers. I’ve been lucky with my 2016 JKUR. It’s be mostly problem free, outside of self inflicted issues. My 2019 compass though, I had it at the dealership four times in the first three months of owning it 😔.

I may tap out if it's owned by the chicoms. Not tap out of having my current Jeeps, but likely would be done buying new. Same would go for Dodge.

And just so that we're on the same page, you say "chicoms" being that Dongfeng is in fact, a "state-owned" company and China is communist, correct? This, as opposed to Fiat which was just a company in the country of Italy.
 
So many of the parts are already manufactured there, then shipped here for assembly.

I have no idea where the transmission parts and engine parts are manufactured. I know one town where they are sent for final machining and assembly and that is in Kokomo, Indiana. I know Kokomo also has a castings plant, but I believe that is just transmission housings.
The Indianapolis foundry (Chrysler engines) closed several years ago after a major addition and they leveled the place.

This is NOT accurate or true. As mentioned or at least for now, a VAST MAJORITY of the Wrangler is still made with parts that are sourced here in America. SOME parts are made in Mexico, Canada and overseas.

Engines are made in Mexico.
 
I think we'd see a major decrease in product quality if everything went over there, just look at what else they send our way. Toyota of fine but most of them here in the us are manufactured here. Having said that, ownership doesn't mean that will happen. Ultimately, and this is bigger picture, the US needs to stop selling their brands off to the Chinese state and find a way to be profitable here- across the board, not just Jeep (which I know we don't currently own anyway, but at least fiat was trying)
 
I wouldn't care too much. As long as its built here in the U.S... Shit just wait a year or less and the Jeep brand would probably be sold again. :rolleyes: Although if they start building them in China I wouldn't buy a new Jeep again.

Yup I think we have unions to thank for that. A lot of these shitty workers that are lazy asses can get away with a lot and the employers cant do much about it. I've seen in first hand at one of the hospitals I work at.
 
Not ok if China bought the entire company.
Not ok if China owns any portion of the company.
Not ok that parts come from China.
China IS the enemy of the free world. Don't kid yourself.
They owe the world everything for releasing, Covid.
