What about an oil cooler in the rear with fans as well?...that’s what will really cool the engine, especially crawling at 2 mph on a 95 degree day...that will add a bunch of fluid , and with a dedicated fan should really keep the temps down

Strangely I did not have coolant issues rock crawling, idling etc, only moving at speeds. Anyways, after the trans cooler, which would get hot crawling, there’s just no more room anywhere else.

The previous radiator/fan setup I had just never seemed to work right at road speed. Hopefully the new Ron Davis radiator and camaro fan help that along with a proper exhaust.

Who knows, this could all be junk too.

I seen the youtube video of some of the install. That's a pretty serious tranny cooler with 3 fans they used. I'm interested to know which one that is? I'm betting that should help keep the temps down with more volume, big radiator, and 3 fans.
Also is the fans setup on a switch or a thermostat?
Looking forward to seeing the finished product.

Trans cooler is being wired straight to the ignition. Less to worry about.

Maybe you already thought of this but those big KC style driving lights could be causing some turbulence and not allowing air into the radiator at road speeds?

Would you think you would want to switch that off for water crossings if they we high enough to submerge?

We talked about it, Spal says their full sealed units are submersible. To the same line of thought, a temp sensor or switch is just another failure point as well. I can’t see all 3 fans going out in a single crossing and even if they do, still have long lines and a cooler just not with fans assisting.

Again, we’ll see, but I am to the point of trying radical.

You rite. I think even if the fans do go out just having the added capacity will help in controlling some of those high temps.

I have both temp and manual switches on my Switch Pro for both oil & trans cooler...just in case.

I really hope all this works out for you and you have a reliable trouble free rig when you’re done...I absolutely know first hand your frustration...

Which actually reminds me one of the options we opted for in the new harness is a switch that allows the gm ecu to control the radiator fan speed automatically as the default, but with a switch interrupter, can be overridden for max duty cycle.

We may revisit the trans cooler fans. We’ll see. They are trying to clear all the remnants of the motech crap. They left a lot of exposed wires to no where and even left the wiring to the factory Jeep throttle when they replaced it with the Gm throttle which caused some troubles tracking that down.

They also hacked up the bottom of the original Jeep transmission shifter assembly to make their kit work which knowing now is why the shifter was always so damn sloppy. It will be nice to hopefully have the positive detents back. Never know when you need reverse in a hurry without being able to look.

New setup ran pretty good out at KoH. Pulling 3 guys and a full load up Cajon Pass, coolant didn’t even break 205. Trans temps were about 233 even with all the weight going 80mph in 5th. Only saw coolant creep into the 220s once during the week and that’s when we were hammering pretty good in 2wd in the washes.

The power difference is certainly noticeable and is a big help in the whoops. The night and day difference though is the transmission tuning which is smoother on road, has better downshifts, better tap shifts and is way better off road.

The new stainless full headers and full rig welded exhaust sounds awesome. Out of gear it has a nice lope and in gear it sounds great. Surprisingly, it is weirdly quieter in the cab though. The craziest part is the wrap though. You can literally put your hand on the full heat soaked exhaust system.

Only issue during the week was a blown air line for the front locker out on one of the hammers trails but the new power made rolling through rocks no problem and we made a simple patch back in camp.

All in all very happy and excited to keep seeing where this goes. Now to something with that rear suspension 🧐

233 on the trans temp seems high with a cooler and dedicated fan, doesn’t to you?

I thought so initially as well, but that is a heavy load and the cooler is stuck in a place with limited airflow. According the the transmission builder those are the temps he would expect to see as he says the 6l80s just tend to run very hot comparatively. They claim shutdown temps would be more like 275-300 (yikes).

It was the only time I saw it above 205, otherwise I’d definitely be more concerned. We’ll keep and eye and see how it goes. It’s definitely one of those no free lunch scenarios. Getting a transmission cooler out from in front of the radiator let that run a lot cooler.

Awesome! So glad to hear you're happy with your new setup and that it's been staying cool! As far as rear ends go, I would HIGHLY recommend this:
