In & Around the Extraterrestrial Highway

With all the craziness that was the 2022 SEMA Show behind us, Cindy and I were in desperate need of getting out and doing a little winding down. And as luck would have it, my birthday was coming up and that was enough of an excuse to do just that. Fortunately for us, our good friends Tony and Steph were able to join us for the well needed R&R fun and as the title states, most of our time was spent exploring the vast Nevada desert surrounding the Extraterrestrial Highway. While we didn't take a whole lot of pics, the following few highlight a bit of what we did.

Here we are getting ready to head out across one of the most desolate stretches of the Nevada desert.

In spite of this being a well maintained highway, the only real traffic we saw were these ladies.

We soon found ourselves off the pavement and working our way up a canyon that looked pretty and just because.

Above the canyon, the scenery and terrain changed quite a bit.

It was chilly out but the rock formations that we came across just begged us to get out and explore them up close.

On the move again, the views from this trail were truly amazing.

Working our way across the valley and heading to the next mountain range we wanted to explore.

As luck would have it, we found a nice canyon through the mountains.

About half way through the well forested canyon we found ourselves in, we came across an opening that begged us to stop and check out.

As we would later come to find, this was the site of an old historic stage stop.

Turns out there's even stories of this site being haunted with souls of natives who were massacred here.

One of several springs that can be found.

Off the trail and back in civilization, we made a stop at one of our favorite Nevada watering holes - the Little A' Le' Inn.

Happy Birthday to Me!

After a delicious lunch and a drink or two, we made our way back out across the desert and to visit what we like to call, 'Dead Town'.

This is the remains of a mine that ceased operation in modern times. As in, a lot of what you see looks and feels like the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse.

It'd been a while since Cindy and I had last been here and it was sad to see just how much worse of a condition it is in today. I'll never understand what possesses people to just destroy everything they see and can get their hands on.

Around every corner, you half expect to see dead people.

Old magazines on the floor date back to just 1999

Here we are after driving up to the main mine shaft itself and as the sun was going down.

The actual mine itself is ENORMOUS! I've gone back a long ways and still haven't found it's end.
20221113182405-633917a6.jpg

Unfortunately, it was freezing inside the tunnel and cave ins like this didn't help to instill much confidence in going further forward on this trip.
20221113182355-8c138d7e.jpg

Back down from the mine, we pulled into the remains of the massive mill house.

20221113182527-1f3bc823.jpg

Back on the highway, we made sure to stop over at the Mailbox.

I think this is maybe where all the mail in ballots get sent.
20221113182551-34b52b80.jpg

And finally, our trek across the Extraterrestrial Highway came to an end at the old Area 51 Alien Research Center.

Happy late birthday Eddie. Glad you guys got to get out and, in the 392. I’ve missed these trip reports. The pic just below the shot of the Magazine has a big saucer looking piece that looks very similar to what we all saw on the 2021 New Years run on our way to the coliseum mine. Wonder if they could be part of the same type of machinery. 🤔

Probably not a great place for an 8 month pregnant woman or a new born. Rain check lol
LOL - nah, probably not. It'll still be out there and we'll cash in on that rain check sometime in the future.
Happy Birthday Old Man!
Thank you my friend.
how cool, great way to spend a birthday (y)
It was well needed, thanks!
Cool trip, does look like a neat Area to explore
What makes it cool is how far from anything it is. As in, very few asshats to screw things up.

Yes it does! Good eye. These were in half pieces though but probably would have been about the same size as that one if they were together.
Looks like a great day! Happy Birthday Eddie! 🥃
Thank you :)
That’s awesome… the perfect way to celebrate a birthday. 👍
It was for this old guy anyway. THanks!

How nice to be able to get away and check out some incredible scenery for your Birthday. Looks like a good time.

I loved the shots in the old mill. Black and white would look cool as well.

May your have many more Birthday Adventures.
