The SCOURGE of Off-Roading - This is Why Land and Trails Get Closed

Wow that’s bullshit! I’m sorry you guys had to deal with that…. So many entitled douchebags in this world. Hope things get better out there!
Thanks. We had been going out there for the couple of weekends since we bought the place. This was the first time anything like that had happened and I'm guessing it was just because of the holiday weekend. I think the more we can secure the fence line and make it clear that the land is occupied, something that it had not been in a long time, things will change. Even the second guy started walking back off the ledge and being nice once I met their lame ass On X Offroad challenge.

I think the biggest problem with side-by-sides is that anyone can do it and pretty much, with the swipe of a credit card. I mean, you can literally take one home on a small trailer and with just about any car or truck. There is no concern that you need to take care of it the way you would something that you need on a daily basis to get you to work and back. And, there's no learning curve as you can pretty much take it off road and rip shit up, right from the get go. Back in the day, every Jeep was a daily driver and most enthusiasts belonged to clubs. There, they learned about things like airing down, disconnecting, spotting and maybe most importantly - TRAIL ETIQUETTE.

Fuck those guys, what a bunch of assholes. People out here on side by sides are the typical douchbags as well, they come ripping up my dirt road kicking up dust as I’m trying to enjoy the nice weather on my deck. I’m sorry to hear that you had to deal with them on your property, I’m glad to hear that you got the fence line sealed.

^^^^ This has been my argument about them too, super capable machines bone stock with very little learning curve required to do what used to be extreme shit. I've seen too many brand new SXS's at sand mountain parked next to the entrance road with all the passengers being loaded in ambulances or worse BLM dragging a body bag off the hill.

What a couple of douchebags, sounds like guy #2 would have been more likely to respect your sign if he wasn't following guy #1 which makes him a pussy for not speaking up to his friend and insisting they do the right thing. One douche combined with any amount of followers makes a group of douches.

More people need to speak up when their friends start getting stupid, and if they won't listen get new friends. I'd bet most douches would stay home if there was no one willing to buy into their shit.

Lots to catch up on but I’m glad to hear that you got things mostly resolved. Some times an 80% solution is better than a perfect one that take forever to implement. Good luck on securing your land.

Side by Sides are the JetSkis of the Desert. (n)
It's unfortunate but yes, that's exactly what they are.

It really sucks that I hear this from so many people. Not that I haven't met nice guys who run side-by-sides, it just seems that more times than not, they aren't.

That's just the thing right? I could hear these guys discussing whether or not to open the gate and come through. Guy #1 convinced guy #2 that it was okay even though he seemed to have misgivings about it.
When I was in Moab, last summer, the damn things were everywhere. They didn't slow down much, when they passed on the trails.
They're enough of a problem out there that Moab no longer allows them to do the big event they used have. They are really wrecking trails like the Rubicon as well. Tearing off trail just to get by a jam instead of working things out and being respectful. I see it all the time and it just sucks.

Thank you. Things definitely seem better now.

Funny, I know of a couple back east that bought one and started wheeling it. About six months in they rolled it pretty bad and messed up there kids (all is well with them now) and then they sold it right away. Had they had some sort of training it would have been avoided. It wasn’t an accident that lead to the roll, it was a mistake.

Same thing. A good friend of mine bought the top of the line RZR Turbo with no real offroad experience outside of military HMMWVs. He rolled that thing 3 times in a year.

We deal with them all the time where I live. The local rangers have closed so many trails in the past couple years because of the damage they cause. It doesn't help that one of the locals began to stockpile them and run a "desert tours" rental company to let a bunch of green horns loose on the trails.

Sucks to here about the trespassers, people in general have little disregard for other peoples property, I have had several run ins with people that felt they had the right to hunt on our property with out asking(we have good fences and a lot of no trespassing signs). A few years back I found a fairly expensive treestand on my place. I took it down and cut it up into many small pieces and left it in a pile with a note to call me, I never received a call.

Ive owned SxS's for years do the farm and hunting places we have, in the past year since we have started offroading our jeeps I am shocked at how little respect most of those guys have.

My neighbors actually got some SxS's a couple years ago and talked about how awesome they were. They tried convincing me that I should sell the jeep and get one. Now one of them is thinking about selling his rzr and getting another jeep 😂. Maybe the fad will calm down before all the trails are closed.

Eddie, I would buy some inexpensive trail cams and hide them around your property. These guys or others like them will continue to trespass. At least they do around here. Deer hunters love to sneak in on the back side of my place every year. They all suffer from extremely blurry vision when it comes to property lines. When I spot a hidden vehicle or a neighbor calls and reports them, I always confront them and always armed. Many neighbor farmers are prosecuting. I've been told first offense is $350.00 plus court cost.
And.... the bad part is, if they would come to me and ask, there would be a good chance I would give them permission. You have to be clear even then because I've had one guy get permission then that turns into him and three friends.

Game cameras are an excellent idea. 👍🏻

If nothing else you might get a photo of a Yeti! 🤣😂

That is so frustrating but I have to say I'm not surprised. Though I know a few with SXS that are good people, I have to say the majority are extremely rude with little to no trail etiquette. And I think you nailed it, anyone with a credit card and go buy one.

That's just the thing, so many people who buy these things think that they're capable of doing anything and at high speeds and so they do really dumb things with them. And, if they crash or roll, whatever - it's not like they're destroying their daily driver. Lame that they hurt their kids in the process of being a dumbass.
Sucks that you had to deal with these idiots! Hopefully it will be the last...
So far so good. I'm guessing that most of the people who were cruising through the ranch were locals and hopefully that word will get around that access is now closed.

Honestly, if they're really doing tours, I'd rather see that as at least someone will be showing them the way. But, if they're just being let loose, that really sucks. As mentioned, the very first guy I saw just tore up the hill, on the public land side and just so that he could get around my property. These bone heads have no concept of treading lightly.
