Fuel Prices

Never mind, I googled it. We're all good. (y)
Both parties, and the throngs of people who support them with blind ignorance to how complex almost every hot button issue in our society truly is, are myopic. People want to point to one singular evil, and to believe there is one corresponding simple fix. Life really isn’t that simple. Correlation and causation are not one and the same.

Some guy named Joe Biden signed an Executive Order which reduced domestic energy production. Unless I miss-understand Supply and Demand in relationship to market price, I’d say the evidence is clear that he is individually responsible for the increase in fuel prices. The US went from being a net exporter of energy back to being dependent. Having worked in many of the shit-hole countries we buy oil from I’d much rather we keep our $$ in our own country and stop paying to fund terrorism.

In addition Biden tapped into the Strategic Petroleum Reserve- which are huge salt caverns filled with oil actually meant for use during wartime and not to lower the price of oil for political purposes. That shit is wrong no matter who does it. Also, because this reserve must eventually be refilled- usually with even more expensive oil, that further effects the market price of fuel.

Sometimes the answer is pretty obvious.

I have to say, this is what I’ve been seeing as well. And let’s be honest here, what we’re seeing now IS exactly what this administration has always wanted and still wants. Hell, he campaigned on it. I just don’t understand why he and his supporters don’t own it.

Demand was artificially low, way low. That was a result of crazy public health policies that locked down the world (and happened before Biden). It wasn’t that long ago that people on this forum were discussing how the world was ending because the price of crude was the lowest it had ever been. The pendulum swung fast, very fast, in the other direction and demand far outpaced supply. In either scenario, producers controlled the market to maximize profits. No doubt there are innumerable points where governmental policy also had an impact.

I’m sure someone on here smarter than I can state how long it actually takes to get a barrel of oil out of the ground and turn it into actual gas that is on the market and ready for consumption. Is it days, months, years?

Certainly, Biden’s anti-Dino energy policies will have an impact on supply and gas prices at some point. I just don’t believe that they have an impact in real time. So much about the global supply chain, including energy, was wrecked by failed health policies across the world that I think it is myopic to believe that simply changing presidents and firing up the drills will do much to prices in the near term. It will take years, if not decades, to recover from the supply chain (and other economic and social) issues caused by the pandemic.

The good news is I think some political tides will be changing. So, I will have the opportunity in the next several years to either eat my words or say “I told you so.”

I just went to Gas Buddy to see what gas prices have been like over the last 3 years. Here's a graph that they have to help illustrate things...

Not saying that the guy in office is singularly responsible for what it shows but there's no denying that prices have been on a steady climb since mid November 2020.

And really, what we're seeing is EXACTLY what the people currently in charge have been wanting all along. It's what they've campaigned on, it's what they promised and it's how they said they would save us from ourselves. Why they aren't embracing this, owning it and celebrating their achievement, regardless if they were "actually" responsible for it or not, is nothing short of mind boggling to me.

So as demand dropped sharply due to the pandemic, prices dropped. As the United States (and other countries) started to ease lockdowns and demand began to increase, prices went up. Am I wrong?

Demand can obviously impact the supply/demand curve every bit as much as supply…and both clearly have an ultimate impact on price.

And I agree that artificial restraints on supply (ceilings or floors) have a negative impact on price and on the normal operation of market supply/demand equilibrium. All I’m saying is that it is a far more complex issue than just looking at the president and saying immediate policy results in immediate change.

Our country is in a perpetual trap of looking for singular fixes to complex problems (mass shootings, abortion, education, income equality, healthcare, the environment, immigration, national security versus isolationism, etc.). I long for a change from the status quo perpetuated by both parties. Where have all of the intellects gone?

(I’ll get off my soapbox now and leave it alone)

Not even attempting to argue how supply and demand works or how the investments that people make or don't make in commodities, futures markets, can affect things like prices at the pump. All I'm saying is that the people in charge wanted what we're seeing now. The people who voted for them wanted it. They are the ones who are forcing auto makers to eliminate V8's from their line up and go all electric. This is all part of their master plan and how they intend to save the planet and us from ourselves. While I could totally be wrong here, to me, the market has in part been reacting to them now being in charge. But of course, that's just me.

It takes quite a while to get oil out of the ground and to turn it into gasoline. I work domestic onshore oil and from start to finish, just to get crude oil out of the ground is more than a year, from idea to oil. Most of the producing wells can’t produce more oil to even make a difference. The operators are usually running producing wells to produce as much oil as they can. To make an impact on new production you have to drill new wells. Rigs can be found but there’s a huge shortage of rig crews to run them.

I couldn’t think it or say it better. They wanted it and they want it to get worse

This graph clearly shows that fuel was at a low price before COVID.

I wish I was still paying $2.72 a gallon….

Anyone who does not understand that Biden and crew WANT fuel prices to go up is not listening to what Biden and crew are actually saying.
