2.0T without etorque off-road handling characteristics

Jeep pre-newbie here. Still deciding which engine to get on a new JLUR. I’ve searched but cannot find a discussion here on how the 2.0L turbo handles in 4L on the rocks, etc. On my current ride, I have to depress the skinny pedal about 2” before the revs build. I expect the 4 banger turbo will be different, of course, but would appreciate any specific insights, especially high altitude crawling. Dealer wont let me take it up Imogene Pass, strangely enough…

I have 2.0L T e-Torque and it is fine off road and crawling. I have 37's and stock 4:10 gearing. You do not have to 'wind it up' to get it to go.
I cannot say what the non e-torque is like, however I believe it is the same engine. That being said...the e-torque with 48v battery does give additional power in the low band so it isn't apples to apples.
 
Sounds good thank you. I guess I’m concerned about pedal modulation and all that torque - how easy it is to control how suddenly it comes on…but then I worry about tne dumbest stuff 🤣

It's not that much torque. Not a V8 with gobs of power. No big deal. Crawls great over boulders at idle.

I am renting a JLU 2.0 right now...while I cannot attest to its capabilities in 4lo, I am pleasantly surprised as to how peppy this little engine is. I may cruise around Decker today and fish the S Platte...swing some soft hackles on the 4wt

It does not take much to crawl over rocks in low gear. Ancient jeeps with tiny engines are/were able to do that. A more important consideration is a feeling of turbo-lag while driving on the road, which is a consideration for any turbo vehicle. I have the 2-door JL 2.0 with E-Torque and have not noticed any issues. Someone I know has a JLU without E-Torque and he complained to me about turbo lag.

Appreciate the insight. I’m keen on the Extreme Recon package so it turns out I may not have a choice on engine anyway, unless they loosen it up by the time I’m ready to order

Thats a dinky sized turbo, there shouldn't be any real lag at all. I will bet however they programmed the gas pedal to not be that responsive like most modern vehicles and it takes a second to get it going.

Mine doesn't have e-Torque and I notice the turbo lag a lot especially when I am in stop and go traffic.

Only time I have experienced 'lag', is for example when you are decelerating to an intersection to make say a 90 degree turn, and you get slowed down, to below 20mph, when you than accelerate either through the turn or right after, there is always a lag. Unless you are 'back revving' to keep RPM up you will have lag. Crawling I have never had an issue. Like I stated earlier, many times you idle up obstacles. The times where a bump is needed lag is not an issue. If anything, you are waiting for torque convertor, not turbo when you are powering up a boulder.

What RPM do you feel it kick in
Maybe it's my inexperience in driving a turbo vehicle but I often find myself lunging forward too quickly to the car in front of me and having to hit my brakes. I believe it's the turbo starting to kick in. I don't have this problem when I drive my other cars nor when I had my old JK.

If I were you I wouldn't drive anything with HP than.

Lol. Fun thread.

I've owned a few vehicles with turbos. And I don't think the 2.0L has near the lag older turbo vehicles have. I'm sure it's software related with the throttle and newer technology.

As far as the 'lunging forward,' I notice that a little too but I don't think it's the turbo. Seems transmission related to me but doesn't really feel abnormal to me, just feels different. (That's what she said).
